First aid for splayed legs?

Dear all,

I have two baby dove chicks about 8 days old with each having a splayed leg. Is there anything I can use to support their leg in its proper position so that it heals? I do not have experienced avian vets where I live so it is useless to take them to the vet. I had a similar case with a button quail and they could do nothing to cure her. So any ideas to make these doves' life a bit better would be appreciated. I know what could've cause the splayed legs...their parents carried very little nesting material in the wooden nest-pen and the chicks could not support their leg. Next time round I will add more nesting material myself to prevent further similar cases. Any advise to help me cure these doves is greatly appreciated.

In falconry if we have a baby bird with splayed legs we use a type of leather hobble. The Shackle style item is long enough so the legs can spread a natural distance apart and the youngster can still move around freely. We also put them on a non slip surface (which they should have been on in the first place) such as carpet or astroturf.
The link below gives a rough guide to making a cotton hobble although i might suggest a thicker material as cotton thread could cut into a youngsters skin.

I breed budgies for 11 years and had a few budgies with splayed legs when they were 3-6 days old. Its because the parent sat to heavy on the chicks. I used a drinking straw cut to the size of the leg and split so as to fit over the leg. Do this to both legs and then tape or tie the straws together and leave on for a week and hopefully the legs will have improved and you will have to gauge wether you need to re-apply.
