How can we promote disability awareness?

I was inspired by Cindy Crawford's question "How can we make curing cancer a global priority?" I'm not saying cancer is not important, in fact, I think cancer research is very important. But what about all the disabilities out there that aren't as well publicized?

I have cerebral palsy, myself. I try to promote disability awareness as much as I can. But there are thousands of disabilities out there that people have never even heard of, or don't think are as important as big, well publicized diseases like cancer, or AIDS.

I think we should start in the schools-particularly in the middle and high schools. Kids at that age are so ignorant, and often those years are torture for a child with a disability. If we just took the time to explain to kids about disabilities, maybe kids with disabilities wouldn't feel so left out.

no one wants to be aware of dissablities so we need to champion stem cell research so at some point they can splice genes or whatever it takes to get rid of these diseases before anyone is born with them, however my problem is from an injury, its uncomfortable for normal people to see anyone who is less able than they are.

Just as Rosa Parks advocated for the rights of black people in the '50s, we need to advocate our disabilities to everyone in the '00s.

If people with disabilities came out of the house and started to live there lives, there wouldn't be a whole lot of need for education. If schools stopped sending their disabled kids outside of the school to seperate programs, nondisabled student would see them throughout the day.

I use a wheelchair and I happen to love to dance. I've been to some of the hottest clubs in Los Angeles to dance. There were thousands of people. No matter how much someone drank or what honey they went home with, they all remember 'hey, there was this guy in a wheelchair dancing in the middle of the dance floor."

That's how we raise awareness -- we just be ;)
