If you had the power to grant Pardons, would you grant a pardon in this situation....?

Let's say a new Albert Einstein emerges in the Medical Field and is churning out cures like mad. Every few months, some cancer or disease or something is cured. He's amazing. Breast Cancer, Leukemia, Cystic Fibrosis, AIDS, all of it. He kills someone. Should he be pardoned? He won't contribute further to the progression of medical research if he is. Would you? Do you think it would be fitting for the President to pardon him?

Won't contribute if he is imprisoned/not pardoned***

It depends on the circumstances of the crime. If they show some sociopathic Jack the Ripper tendencies (e.g. randomly killing people for going over the speed limit), then I would think it would be inappropriate to grant a pardon.

For most other situations, I would hope that the local prosecutor and the local judge would give the weight that is permitted under the law to the general good character of the defendant in seeking and imposing a lesser punishment.

If they did not, and it was a situation where, though not legally justifiable, the offense was to some degree understandable and not likely to be repeated by this defendant, I would think that some consideration of a pardon or commutation of sentence would be appropriate.

you don't really know what a pardon is do you? It's to correct a flawed court system and a check on the judicial. This case is straight forward and rule of law prevails.

Atava: if what you say is true, it comes at an insanely high political cost. I rule that out on the basis of rationality. It's usually a fundamental ideological difference.

Yes.

The lives of the millions he would save outweigh the one murdered.

No Necro...a Pardon can be granted just because the Governor or President WANTS TO. It doesn't happen without cause because the pardoner would pay the political price.

How does he kill the person. Did they volunteer for an expermential medical drug, did he defend his home from a thief, didcar have a blowout and he could not regain control before he hit someone. Or did he pull out a gun and kill them in cold blood? Was he wasted behind the wheel?

If his actions were justified in the killing or beyond his control I would hope he would be let off, if not yes a pardon is in order. If he decided to kill someone in cold blood or used a volunteer for a medical test without consent then you can not give a person a pardon. You can give them an option to work in a private facility which is nicer than a prison cell so they can continue to work under armed guard but never again should this person be free.

Exceptions cannot be made to the law. Unless a new law is promulgated to the effect, no pardon should be allowed.

Let's wait and see if that ever happens.
Wait, maybe it did, are you talking about Mary Winkler? Her husband could have saved a kazillion souls, but he got a bullet in the back for smacking around one little smart-mouth ho.
He's dead, children have no father, but she will prance around free, and be rich after a movie and book sales. No doubt, Lifetime will carry it.

Grant the pardon, sheesh!

Murderers go free all the time who contribute nothing to society, why not an otherwise upstanding citizen?

NO
Life is a sacred sanctity given by Gd to man. Nobody, is allowed to kill unnecessarily. In case of war or self defense it is different.

Killing of one man is like killing of whole humanity.

Think, there is a certain set plan in the universe, everybody and everything is playing its part according to a set system. To every action there is an equal an opposite reaction.

Mr X is supposed to act and there are subsequent reactions, on and on. So, every living thing is destined to perform certain actions predestined and willfull, and the plan of reaction to this activity is already planned. Now this dotor eliminates Mr X by killing him, that is removing him from the action. That would mean that the whole reactions and interactions will have to be replanned against the will of the Creatior, who had a certain plan in mind.

That is why killing is not permitted and punishable by max penalty.

If this Doctor kills somebody- Mr X, who has a wife, children etc, how would the killed persons relations feel.

Maybe, this man who is killed by the Doctor, is a v important person for somebody, some organization, some society, some country, some faith, would they forgive the doctor?

Maybe the person killed by this doctor is something vvv dear, and irreplacable for you, would you pardon him?

Dear Fslcaptain***

In this instance, me as a President, he would not be pardoned, but I would insist he carry on with his medical field under police protection.
You cannot pardon ANYONE for killing someone!! There is just no excuse.
He would serve his time, continuing with his research and contributing to medical progression.

I would not pardon him. Lives may be lost but in the long run it will destroy the integrity of our legal system. It would be a place where justice only exists for the few elites. I strongly belive that we cannot put "special" people above the law.

Albert Einstein was a physicist. He never even worked on a cure for anything.

OK, so you proved that you're no Albert Einstein. You're forgiven.
