Have a hearing problem understanding my new 50 inch sony tv?

am 80 years old and hearing reflects all those years, it's lousy... what kind of speaker system can i buy to help cure the situation without messing my up my tv while at the same time hopefully not costing a mint..... wireless ? approx cost? Hearing aids do not help me

Run the output through a frequency filter that you can adjust to give you the best response in your ears. Should be available through most stereo outlets.

Turn on Closed Captioning (CC)

You may no be able to hear all the music and sound, but at least you will understand what they are talking about!

Of your TV has a headphone out, get a pair of headphones.

If it's just you, i'd suggest running some wireless headphones. This will allow you to turn the volume up as high as you need it to be. You can probably get a set for approx. 90 dollars. You may also look into the two speaker plus subwoofer system. Bose makes a decent one but expensive. I'd check in to samsung or sharp

You should consider using another set of speakers for the sound output. In fact, most of the speakers that come with the TV are pretty bad and the sound seems like it comes from a hole in the ground.

I've used Klipsh brand speakers because of the clarity of the sound. They use a horn design for the treble which makes the upper frequency sounds very clear.

If you go to a place like Best Buy or other similar store they might have some for you to listen to. You can see for yourself if you hear more clarity, of course inside the store isn't really the best place to hear because all the other noise going on. But if you tell them you want to have better speakers with a clearer sound than the built-in ones they probably should understand because I'm pretty sure they know the built-in speakers are generally no good.

The only issue might be cost, since bookshelf speakers aren't necessarily inexpensive. Another alternative is to get the Klipsh computer speakers, which might not be as good but will cost a bit less.

get a surround sound system with a powered subwoofer of at least 10/12 inches, and run the tv through the surround receiver.

i actually got a descent set the JBL simply cinema for 50 bucks on craigslist, and it blows away my infiniti 15 inch setup!!!

The best bet is to buy a surround sound system. You can buy a system for less than $300 that includes everything you need. The best thing about this kind of system is the dialog comes out of a center speaker located either above or below the TV. This speaker can be turned up to give a greater lift to the speech.

If you have a hearing problem the most common kind is a lack of high frequencies, so you might want to find the bass and treble control and boost the treble to give greater speech clarity.

I would suggest a trip to Circuit City or Best Buy to purchase a complete surround sound system. I've had my Sony for five years now, it only cost $300, and it still makes everything sound great to this day.
