Do we spend more money on viagra than on more "important" research?

Not to say that sexual dysfunction isn't important (trust me, I don't want to open that can of worms), but when compared to AIDS/HIV or any other more debilitating disease, how are we spending our money and putting our energy? Should we be ashamed of ourselves? I'm honestly asking because I don't know. Please no rude responses.

Is our generation's legacy going to be viagra and not a cure for HIV? I hope not.

And, also, please don't post that joke about Alzheimer's and viagra (about how people will have viagra and not know how to use it's effects). I've seen it a million times.

What about HIV/AIDS in Africa and improving education to help prevent it? I think we can all agree that most of us in the US know how HIV/AIDS is spread.

You have any idea how much we spend on Aids ???

We spend 5 times more on aids research, than cancer research.

The US spends 21 billion a year on Aids research.
The US spends 4.7 billion dollars a year on Cancer research.

There are 400,000 americans with Aids.
There are 10,000,000 americans with Cancer.

There are 15,000 Aids related deaths each year in the US.
There are 500,000 Cancer related deaths each year in the US

Now it seems to me, we should be spending the 21 billion on Cancer and the 4.7 billion a year on Aids research.

And when you say " we " should spend.

Is that " we " the US government, or the pharmacutical companies ??

Of course the government should, and they already do.

But the Pharmacutical companies, are also business's, and they have to make money also.

There is not much money to be made, in aids drugs.

Sex is a hard thing (no pun intended) to give up.

Viagra is fantastic.....don't knock it till you've tried it....

No. I can give a testimonial as a man past 45 that Viagra is the best thing they've ever done for older men.

With just 25mg of that stuff I have the d矛ck of an 18 year old man once again!!! Old blue will flat stand up and salute on that stuff!

This was what Robin Williams meant when he said those vitamans would give you the "d矛ck of death!"

Just call me old Woody Wood Pecker!

no... But to turn the question around... how much have *you* personally given for research on *any* of those *important* diseases?

Drug companies are corporations. Their job is to make money. There's more to be had (at much less political risk) in developing drugs people voluntarily buy.

viagra is likely not funded by a government agency. It is a private business that is putting all of the funding behind Viagra, which is the viagra corporation.

So, if u want to say profit and enterprise is before progress and freedom, then yes, but it's not viagra's (the company) job to cure aids, so u cant blame them.

It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world!

But, correct me if I'm wrong, there is no cure for AIDS. SInce the HIV has become a part of the person's DNA it cannot be cured. It can only be controlled. Pardon my ignorance if I'm wrong.

But "Smiling Bob" doesn't seem to be too concerned about Viagra or AIDS!

So-called "lifestyle" drugs are the money makers for big pharma; remedies that may one day free the world from the scourge of toenail fungus, obesity, baldness, face wrinkles and impotence make billions of dollars every year.

The act of sexual intercourse (with a person that you love) is one of the most satisfying things a human can do....Sex is a money maker....

As previously stated, Viagra is manufactured by Pfizer, which is a corporation. The funding that goes into reserch and development is private, in other words, not from the government, or the taxpayer, only from consumers, and investors.
Some AIDS research is done by private corporations as well, but a lot of the funding comes from independent charities.
Hope this helps to clear it up for you.

If you ever find the cure for cancer, then i'd be impressed, its had money thrown at it from many generations, still no cure.Worse is that HIV is preventable(except for botched tranfusions) it is a disease that comes from a choice,to engage in sex, unless its spread in liable malicious intent. In my High School years it was the Herpes that you'd catch(another incurable disease)These are all preventable by our actions.Iwas watching an Encyte commercial the other day about male enhancment and started to laugh because when you get old, will you still be trying to sleep around with every woman that comes along? What kind of morals do we as a society have?

For a questioner not wanting to open a can of worms, see how often you have used the word "viagra".
Very little reseach is going into S.D. at present. You can go on the bandwagon for HIV / AIDS. I watch who I have sex with. If I contract it it's my fault and if there is a cure or remittence pill for it ? Very Good. If not I'm out of luck. Business will continue going where they can make money and believe me if you have AIDS your medication is expensive and makes a lot of proffit, a lot going to the government who gives it back out in grants, foreign aid, military efforts, And of course, trips for the politicians.
In Canada ,our federal tax is 5% since Jan 1st, and at 62 bucks for 4 pills that comes to nearly 80 cents per pill.

I'm 64 with a pacer after a heart attack 4 years ago. I need it .

LEAVE VIAGRA OUT OF THIS!!!!!

Viagra is a trade name -- like Frosted Flakes.

There are lots of different companies making flake shaped cereal that tastes like corn, but only Kellogg makes Frosted Flakes.

The TRUE name of Viagra is the drug it is made of, which is called Sildenafil Citrate. And Sildenafil Citrate began as a blood pressure medication.

It was designed to relieve high blood pressure and other heart dieases (like Pulmonary Hypertention and right side heart failure) by allowing the arteries carrying your blood to expand slightly.

In the same way you can increase water pressure by using a pipe with a smaller diameter, you can DECREASE pressure by using a pipe with a larger diameter. And that is what Sildenafil Citrate does... it allows the blood vessels to expand and causes blood pressure to drop.

Clinical trials showed that the drug worked, but not as well as the designers would like. One "side effect" of the drug was increased sexual response in the male test subjects!

Erections are controlled by expanding and contracting blood vessels, which is exactly what Sildenafil Citrate was designed to do. So one day one of the researchers probably said, "You know, if this stuff doesn't work out as a heart medication, we can STILL sell it....!"

And Viagra was born. It is still sold as a heart medication (a friend of mine has a prescription for it, and I've asked. She will NOT share) but we all know the "usual" use for Viagra.

All hail the fully erect penis! Seriously we were sitting around talking of the demise of American ingenuity and how it boiled down to an erection. Sad statement if ever there was one. But seems to be the way we have gone. Now don't get me wrong a hard penis can provide benefits. But I think there are more serious problems to be addressed. Any man of talent can bring about an appropriate response without one. Maybe that should be concentrated on. Though I would love to see cancers of all types, the killer flus that have been developing and hey maybe even AIDS brought under some type of control. Or how about a decent pharmaceutical that isn't fraught with horrible side effects?

Sex is more important than any other aspects of life and it is the reason why viagra was conceptualized instead of cure for other illnesses and HIV.
