Why do we spend so much money on weapon development....?

..................rather than curing diseases or even aid to poor countries.

"We" being our governments by the way

Billions of pounds are put into it that could be better spent on saving people rather than killing them.

Why?

Well we have already got bio weapons, nukes and many other weapons. Yet we still spend millions to find more effective ways of killing eachother.

Because buying weapons that frighten a potential aggressor is cheaper than fighting a war.

BTW - aid to poor countries will not solve their problems. Look at how much money has gone into Africa over the past four decades - for no long term results.

Because helping people is not as profitable as killing them.

If we don't have better weapons then another country could take us over and then we couldn't cure diseases or aid the poor.

Possibly true, but only if everybody else does the same. Otherwise you produce healthy cannon fodder.
