Is THIS why it is important that we teach evolution and not pseudo-science?

In the link below, we see how evolution is used to help modern scientists find cures for disease. If we start telling kids that evolution didn't happen, they will not be able to do the research that may cure diseases like AIDS.

Just one of many good reasons. I realize that there are wonderful people from all over the world on here, but let me add a comment about education in general in the U.S. It stinks so bad that our young people are losing their reasoning and critical thinking skills. One of the most insidious recent developments has been the advent over the past decade of politically motivated high-stakes testing. Teachers all over the country can no longer spend time teaching research, evaluation, measurement and weighing of evidence, critical thinking -- all the fundamentals of reason. Instead they teach their kids how to pass a test. As a result we are seeing students entering college who require remedial education in almost everything, and have greatly diminished capacity to think for themselves and reason things out. I suppose that might explain some of the inane pubescent rants we see on R&S on a fairly regular basis.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are crucial to the technologies and economies of the future, to repairing the damage we've done to the planet and so very much more. We are defacating in our own nest (at least here in the U.S.) by supporting an education that places politics above learning!

Ah c'mon, God's comming back soon anyway. Why bother curing diseases? It's not like children are suffering and dying by the tens of thousands in Africa, Asia, parts of Europe and in the Americas (basically everywhere sept Antartica)....Oh wait...

all that you said is true we have to keep fairy tale out of schools that 6 days thing evolution is based on science

As if that isn't enough for anyone to take note of evolution. It won't work on the deluded though.

Yes. Evolution is the backbone of modern biology. Because of it, we are able to develop new vaccines every year.

Evolution was considered pseudo-science at one time. We all agree that evolution happens at a certain level of creation. We do not all agree that we humans were once biological goo.

it is also important to teach evolution so that the children of tomorrow will not rely on circular reasoning as taught by religion as the answer to how we came about.

it is important that we teach evolution because it is real, Even if you believe in god you can still trace species back to their origins within the last 5000 years. DNA can absolutely match a mother and father to an offspring. Personally I believe there is no conflict to religion but even if you do believe in god there is room to believe that he created the system for us to discover or why would our brains have adapted?

"There is genetic evidence that the PtERV1 virus infected chimpanzees, gorillas and old-world monkeys about 4 million years ago, but no evidence it infected humans. The virus is believed to have gone extinct perhaps 2 million years ago."

So they were able to extract genetic evidence from a 4 million old simian? Where did they find it? How did they verify it was 4 million years old? They then extracted the same evidence from newer and newer simians until they didn't find it in a 2 million year old one?

Why do you just accept at face value this article and why not other information?

It's one of many good reasons :)

Every word has nothing but an attributed meaning.
Evolution in traditional meaning results in new species, while evolution in pragmatic way is the perfection and adaptation of every specie to a particular epoch or habitat.......I know you don't believe it because I am not Einstein.

Truth is: The scientists Pharmaceutics do know the act on faith from part of humans, that is why they make alerts on things like cancer, and other illnesses to undermine the healing capacity of your body so that you get sick, and buy their products and services.

What is the sense to talk about cures and support Nuclear Energy at the same time?

Yes, you are right. Religion should be in the Sunday class.

Yes, of course it's one of the reasons.

In addition to its own inherent truth, the values of teaching evolution are relatively boundless. The topic, (and Darwin along with his historic struggle for vindication,) serves as a fine example of dedication to data collecting, theory generation and validation of process. It's a credit to science and the study of it helps instill the tools necessary for logical and reasonable thinking on the parts of our young people.

I fully understand your point. I still don't believe that either of the two points of view that you specify should be taught EXCLUSIVELY. Education should be an exposure to any and all ideas (in my opinion) and that children should be taught, first and foremost, to THINK. Please understand I am not saying you are wrong. I am saying that children should be exposed to both ideas and encouraged to think about them. When all is said and done, the cream still rises to the top. That is a very interesting article, by the way.
