They can use this money for other purposes(diminish poverty,invest in research to find a cure for AIDS,CANCER,etc)

Dear, they can not even if they tried, religion is a powerful tool to control the masses, governments need the religion to put cretin validity for their existence, Kings & Queens throughout history where crowned my the head of the religious sects the masses follows, from the enchant Mesopotamian Hammurabi to the modern monarchies religion is the tool to acquire wealth and dominance and both are valuable for the governments of the world.

no, the govt should continue giving subsidies (as well as private sectors/NGOs) bec. religious institutions may not be doing the research for aids and cancer but they have under their care the following: orphans, battered and abused children or women, abandoned elderly and to be able to care for them, the religious groups need funds.

Im not sure about taxing religion though, it can be explored but i read somewhere that donations are non-taxable so why tax the recipient?

yes. they already make more than enough money by the people donating into it. why people cant worship their own god in their home will always ellude me instead go waking early sunday just to go to a building to worship ones god and pay afterwards. when ones god is infinite in all ways need money will always ellude me as well.
