Does anyone have an addiction to Afrin and is there a cure? |
Can an ENT give aid to this problem Going cold turkey will work, but if you have a chronic problem, what you might do first is go to your family practitioner andhave him get you on a nonsteroidal spray, like Flonase. It is very good and nonaddictive. You can get started on the Flonase for a day or two and THEN go off the Afrin. You might still have some rebound congestion, but it should not quite as severe. Huh? I know this doesn't really sound like fun, cuz your head will feel like it is going to explode for a little while. But really try to wean yourself off it and then stop using it completely. It is a nasty addiction and it takes a week or a week and a half I think of not using any to start to feel normal in your sinuses again. Best of luck. Look forward to lying in bed and falling asleep without having to Spray that nasty junk in your nose I'm assuming that you mean Afrin nasal spray. It will cause an "addiction" after continued use and start to rebound: that is, it will not affect your sinuses anylonger. Here is a way to get off of the stuff. Use the Afrin in only one nostril and let the other get back to normal. For instance, starting spraying only your right side; not the left. When the left one clears up naturally, you can stop spraying the right. All that time you will have at least one open nostril. Next time you need a nasal spray, don't use that 12hr. stuff. Try using saline spray as a substitute and you can use this in left nostril, or the one that's stopped up, and it will help. Good luck. I saw a TV program years ago that said that Afrin can become addictive if used long term because what happens is the Afrin shrinks the lining in the nose and sinuses which allows you to breath better when you have a cold but after using it for a while when your membrane returns to normal it gives you the sense that you are congested again because you have gotten use to the smaller membrane... So you use the Afrin to shrink it again and that's where the addiction comes in!! There are a couple options you have. First, they sell over the counter "saline spray" for your nose. It doesn't have the same active ingredients as Afrin and such. It won't seem to work at first, but keep taking and it will start to help. Afrin is an adrenaline type spray and I have never heard of an addiction, but even O2 is addictive psychologically. I suspect that is your case and you can gradually wean yourself off it with determination. |
