Why do people think a fence is the Cure all?

A fence is completely useless when you have illegals digging tunnels underneath the ground. It also doesn't help when you have nothing behind to fence to support it. To me use the National Guard to assist the border patrol in enforcing our border. To me a fence is more or less a band-aid solution and also sends the wrong message. More people more technology not a metal fence that can be dug under.

A fence/wall is just one part of solving the problem. Fining employers, landlords, etc for employing/housing illegals is another part. As for the tunnel problem, ever heard of motion sensors, UAVs, and vibration sensors?
They're being used now. We just need more of them.

I don't think a fence is the cure all - maybe that's why it is actually being considered, I mean I don't feel people in the positions to make a change really want to make one.

That is what is being done.More Border Patrol and in places the fence is electronic surveillance with check points close enough to get there if activity is detected.

it's a start!! they need to give the border patrol, military and minutemen the right to shoot on sight!!! that would definitely stop them too!!

A fence, not just a simple fence, but a multi-layered, defense in depth, fence similar to the ones surrounding maximum security prisons is just ONE step in defending our border. Of course the military should be backing up the fence, that's step number two.

Nobody believes that building a border fence on the US/Mexico border is a cure all, but it is a necessary step. Duncan Hunter stated that the border fence that he is responsible for building in the San Diego area really helped to reduce crime and slowed illegal immigration there. In order to control the illegal alien invasion we need to: make being in the US illegally a felony punishable by at least 60 days in prison, end the practice of giving U.S. citizenship to the children of illegal aliens, keep the National Guard on border patrol duty and let them interdict intruders, pass The Nuclear Family Priority Act by Phil Gingrey (R-GA), HR 938, which would reduce chain immigration, stop providing social services to those who are in this country illegally and finally, end the practice of dual citizenship.
