Why doesn't anyone want to help students pay for college? |
A 22 year old student like me who doesn't qualify for grants because they consider my parents' income until I'm 25, have a child, or get married. Talk about discouraging women to be independent. To top that off, the only scholarship I'm eligible for is $500, even though I have excellent grades, because I don't have time to be in student government or cure AIDS in Taiwan because I'm too busy working my *** off to supplement what my Stafford loan doesn't pay for in school. Not to mention, I live by myself and work all the time to pay all the bills. It's like the U.S. hates hard-working people, and nobody wants to give someone like me, a chance. Trust me. This is how it is. They consider parent's income until age 25 with the 2 exceptions I listed above. Same sh*t happened to me. My parents were seperated, but they still counted both of ther salaries even though my father never helped out. I ended up having to get a pell grant. then later work more than part time and go to school fulltime. the republicans make it this way to to the masses down. so they can make money of their backs. If financial aid isn't working then you just need to save the money you do get and add it to any financial aid you receive. There's also websites you can go to to apply for scholarships and you can find out ones you could be eligible for at your school. If you really need to, work a second job and maybe move back in with your parents. Some states like Georgia do have such programs. In georgia you are qualified regardless of your parents income. In fact your parents income should not be a part of any consideration for aid. At 22 you are no longer a minor and you parents can not even claim you as a tax dependent. I would talk to the person who told you that as it sounds like someone screwed up. Boo hoo, we all have to pay our way through college. You arent entitled to a college education. If you dont have enough money, do 4 years in the Army then they will pay for your education. It may depend if you're in undergrad or grad school. However, if you're living by yourself and paying your own bills, you should not be anyone's tax dependent. The next time you file your income taxes, don't check off the box that says you are someone's dependent. That way, when you file your FAFSA, you can file it as an independent student. |
