When some people have AIDS, why do they believe if they sleep with a virgin, they'll be cured?

This is actually a very popular myth in Africa. Obviously it isn't true, but in Africa many people are highly uneducated about the virus, and believe that only sleeping with a virgin can cure you. This is a main reason why the problem is so prevelent in Africa, it is spread to young girls who usually get pregnant in the attacks, and then brith children who already have the virus.

Don't call this poster retarded, as it is a very common misconception in the poorest and most uneducated parts of the world, and is a very real problem in Africa.

That email forward was just a hoax. Don't believe it! Yeah, it said young girls as young as 10 months old were being raped because of that stupid theory. Well, it's not true. DO NOT Pay attentiong to it.

I believe that in Africa, the equivalent of "witch doctors" told men that were HIV positive that sleeping with a virgin would cure them. This unfortunately lead to a series of rapes, including a 6 month old child. It was in the news, as well as in a documentary on HIV in Africa. There are several stories available online. It is amazing how many negative comments this post received. A lot of people say that this is a stupid hoax. Unfortunately it is not. People remain very ignorant about HIV/AIDS. I have worked in the advocacy field now for 4 years, and I am still amazed about the lengths that people will go to for a cure and avoid the stigma attached to the virus.

That is truly a missconception. Nothing will cure you from having the AIDS virus you can manage the symptoms with medication but sleeping with another person without using a condom will more than likely spread the infection.
