Contract the disease and then volunteer to be a research subject. However, that's not the only way. It's just the best way if you're really serious.

Get a degree in biology, genetics and/or biochemistry, and start doing research. Getting your M.D. won't hurt, either; you don't have to do clinical work, after all, other than an internship.
