Do we really need a cure for AIDS/HIV?

I was talking to my friend about this (oh yea its my daughters bday today!!) I honestly think Aids/HIV is gods way of evening out the sheep. If you catch my drift. If we had a cure for every disease, illness out there than we would be over populated. Everything happens for a reason, and i believe that if you catch aids other than that of born with it, raped and/or married and infidelity arises, that you got aids because you chose not to play it safe and we should not be feeling sorry for you. If we make a cure than everyone that has aids/hiv lives...My friend mentioned if i was in this position however i wouldnt feel the same, but honestly i would. If i decided to have sex,and got aids it was my fault for not be responsible. But thats just my opinion.....

I dont consider it ridiculous, cause Look at all the other std's out there and the ones that have a cure. All that did was tell teenagers and others that having sex is ok, and if you get an std all you have to do is go to the dr and get it fixed and your all better. At least aids gives some kind of pressure to abstain from it until mature enough to act responsible.

I dont agree with you on the rape part someone cant help it if they get raped its no ones choice to get raped. But in the other instances yeah I agree with you 1000%. That goes with other std's as well. I mean there are contraceptives for both men and women out there so no one should have an excuse.

I read in a newspaper article yesterday that to keep AIDS/HIV patients alive it cost $600,000 a year per patient a year. That is way ridiculous!!

That's the most RIDICULOUS argument I've ever heard. Have fun in hell!

Yes, we need the cure.........

I get what youre saying. I dont really agree with you, but I do understand you. Its kinda like smoking cigs and getting cancer, you knew what you were getting yourself into so now you have to suffer the consequences!

Good question.

yeah especially the ones in poor countries in Africa and Asia !!!!!!!

You moron, CHILDREN are born with AIDS every day. Children that never did anything to deserve a slow and painful death. One out of every four children in countries like South Africa is either born with it or orphaned because it kills their parents.

If you are genuinely such a heartless person that you think nothing of the suffering of these millions of people and label it "God's judgement" on them, you will have a lot to answer for on judgement day.

Are tsunamis and hurricanes God's judgement, too? If someone gets sick, should we just let them die? After all, if they got sick in the first place, God much be judging them.... what a stupid argument.

Ugh. The ignorance and the apathy hurt my head. May God have mercy on your soul for condoning the misery of his children and doing nothing to stop it.

The disease is constantly changing. It went from animals to humans, to mostly gay men to African people both sexs. Soon it may become airborne and spread quickly world wide. Perhaps it will "even out all the sheep". Maybe kill you, your parents, your children and all who you know and love.
Perhaps then you would think it was worth curing.

What about the people like nurses and doctors who are taking care of AIDS/HIV people and accidentally get stuck by a dirty needle because the patient is delirious and fighting their care? Are you just writing them off as unwanted too? There is already a shortage of nurses out there. You have a cold way of looking at things. And I do think you would feel differently if you were taking care of the innocent babies that contract AIDS.

OMG.

What if your daughter gets it from unprotected sex? You going to throw her to the wolves too? I'll just cut and paste your post and send it to her on her death bed. You won't be there because you will have called her a who** and told her that she got what she deserves.

You may also look at the point that God gives us the knowledge to learn how to cure these diseases. I don't think God punishes people.

So according to your argument, then anybody who caught E-Coli from what they ate and died deserved what they got because they decided to eat. According to your argument, God sends disease (not very loving if you ask me) to kill his children. Boy, you better not come down with anything and run across someone with the same lack of compassion and stupidity that you have! Otherwise, you may find yourself dying in the street! Thanks Good Samaritan!

Yes we need a cure, of course. If you don't need a cure for AIDS people will die of it! T_T

Totally disagree. I believe mankind has probably already found the cure to illnesses like AIDs and cancer, but if they were to provide a cure, pharmaceuticals would have to close down because they would lose billions of dollars on medicines they now use to treat the disease, treat the side effects of the treatment, etc. I think this world just revolves around money and companies are making more money right now coming up with all kinds of prescribed drugs that only mask and camouflage the symptoms, but they don't really cure it.

Viruses and bacteria evolve at a much quicker pace than other organisms. Take the flu virus for example. Every year there are new strains out there. When you get a flu shot, it is to help prevent just one single strain. You can still get a different type of flu. Because these things are so easily adaptable, they will always stay a step ahead of the drugs that we come up with. Penecillin is rarely prescribed anymore because most bacteria has built an immunity to it. When AIDS is cured, something will take its place. Overpopulation is going to be a huge problem regardless. When so many people are in close contact, a disease can be spread much more easily. Still, God has nothing to do with this.

stupid . why did you get the religion in medical science ???????

Yes we do. We need a cure for human stupidity even more though. I hope your one of the first in line.

Well to tell the people in Africa that are dieing at 2 to 5 thousands a weekly or more,or the people that had to have blood,me be we don't we don't need a cure for heart, cancer who are u to think sometime like that.U must be very self center person.

Even if we go by your argument, there are many people who are born with aids and who get aids without sexual contact. And so we need a cure at least for them. So, why did you ask the question?

Well, with all respect to your point of view, I think its only one way of thinking, I mean what is the purpose of medicine then?
HIV/AIDS is only one fatal disease/condition among many many others, that cause not only death(smooth and easy) but alot of suffering and disabilities to individuals and families and communities, remember AIDS is only one of those, think about it again and then decide: whether it is an infedility issue or the purpose of medicine?!

Your moralistic, self righteous opinion is stupid, insensitive and wrong. God has nothing to do with anything, so HIV is not some "divine" punishment for pre- or extramarital fornication. Opinions like yours have been around forever - I remind you that at one time syphylis was "God's" punishment to the immoral. Funny thing though - "God" gave mankind a cure (through science). BTW nothing happens for a reason - God doesn't care...

i can see your point of veiw thou wonder how you can justify veiwing getting pregnant & dealing with your actions to dying because of youre actions? your talking two totally different extremes here even thou your relating it to sex! i really dont believe that if you had been out having fun & just had spontanious sex with someone without thinking about pretection(due to a passionate situation) & later on you found out you were dying would you deal with it! i work with youth every day & have met quite a few people with aids! all they did was not think for two seconds have you ever done that before? not thought whilst driving your car or cooking dinner? seeing as you have a child thats a serious mistake due to what may have aventuated due to your tiny miss judgement for 2 seconds? so why should people with aids be the only ones who dont deserve a second chance? isnt catching the disease punnishment enough? introvienice drug users who contract the disease also deserve a cure as you must have problems in your life to go using drugs let alone share a needle & the same goes for people who are willing to have unpretected sex! soo really everyone deserves life & a second chance! isnt that what gods real plan is? i hope i have shown you the other side to your arguement as i probably would have shared your veiw if i hadnt become a youth worker & seen what its like on the inside!

Ok.....You need to check yourself! If you have sex, yes there is a risk. Yes, people need to deal with their consequences, but think about all the people that didn't have a choice in contracting HIV/AIDS. Children, blood transfusions, and people that were raped. YES there needs to be a cure for aids!!!

So, you recognize the people who suffer from AIDS because it isn't their fault, and you condemn those who get AIDS because of promiscuous sex. It makes sense in general.

BUT...there are 3 points at which your logic fails.

1) You are saying that you are okay with babies dying in order to punish those who have (in your opinion) had inappropriate sex. You are approving the dying of everyone with AIDS in order to punish a certain sect of them. If there is not a cure for the people you condemn there is also not a cure for the people who are merely victims.

2) What if a person is lied to by a new boyfriend or girlfriend about being tested? Are they a part of the "inappropriate sex" group?

3) People make mistakes and there are consequences. There is no doubt about this. But, are we willing to let millions die because they made a mistake in their life? Why not offer them a second chance.

The problem with all of this is the fact that you are not valuing human life. A life is a life and we must do whatever we can to save it.

P.S. Happy Birthday to Serena! :-P

I understand what you mean, but nobody deserves this disease. No matter what. Some people are in relationships with people they trust and have unprotected sex and acquire the disease. How is that bad? If you love someone and think you will be with them forever and they give you a disease how is it something you deserve. We are humans, we make mistakes. I am sure there are a lot of normal acting/looking humans, that have good jobs, are attractive and get this disease just because they made a mistake or they did not know. Now it is different for someone that goes out every night and sleeps with as many people as they can. They are asking for a death sentence. But they obviously have problems that need to be worked on and they don't deserve to suffer with this disease. I am not sure they will ever find a cure, but they have drugs that can make a person live a somewhat normal life after contracting the disease. AIDS is a terrible disease that nobody wants, but people keep getting it.

What about people who have gotten it through blood transfusions...those are the people who you should care about. You better pray....god forbid you don't get it that way. It is not only through sex...people involved in a crash found out they got it. These are all documente cases.

There are also cases where one woman was trying to get pregnant finally got pregnant then her husband tells her he has AIDS. The problem is the INNOCENT victims...children, people who are faithful and their spouses are sleeping around, people who contract it from contaminated blood etc.

Im sure you wouldn't be saying that if you got aids when you were a teen having unprotected sex like you said. STOP sounding so self righteous. You are just lucky that you missed it!!!

So when there is a cure, we would only give it to the people who got the disease from birth/rape/infidelity? How would we distingush them from other cases? People would of-course lie and say they were raped? Or are you saying no cure what-so ever for anyone? Bad Idea, Bad question.

I know that you think that this is a harmless question...but it is.

Have you ever met anyone with AIDS? I have and I can tell you that they are as good of people as you or I. Yes, people do make mistakes but should they be condemned to death for one mistake? All it takes is having sex one time with an infected partner or a poke with an infected needle and you are condemned to death and social quarantine. I don't believe God is that harsh. The God I know is a loving God. He would not condemn a person to hell for one sin anymore than he would condemn someone to death for one bad decision. A cure for AIDS would be wonderful, no one deserves to suffer the consequences of such a disease. The vast majority of people with this disease are the poor and uneducated (mostly in Africa and India). It is not their fault that they were born into a society that turns a blind eye to their plight. We are all in this together. If you were unlucky enough to be born in Africa today, you might have a different perspective as you would have about a 30% (conservatively) chance of being one of those "sheep". I hope this may change your perspective of this situation.

You are a moron. AIDS is not like other diseases that "kill off the weak" and "control population overcrowding." The HIV virus is one with NO CURE, and moreover, one that ANYBODY can contract. If somebody close to you had gotten AIDS, you would not be saying something so ridiculously asinine. If a person contracts HIV and gets AIDS, they will die. That is a fact. So are you saying that if somebody unknowingly contracts AIDS they deserve it? If you don't have to compassion to feel sorry for fellow human beings in a bad situation, then you're one ****** up bastard. I hope you get cancer.

amen!!!!!

Happy Birthday to your daughter

Human immunodeficiency virus or HIV is a retrovirus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a condition in which the immune system begins to fail, leading to life-threatening opportunistic infections. Previous names for the virus include Human T-Lymphotropic Virus-III (HTLV-III) and lymphadenopathy-associated virus (LAV).[1][2]

Infection with HIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, Cowper's fluid or breast milk. Within these body fluids HIV is present as both free virus particles and virus within infected immune cells. The three major routes of transmission are unprotected sexual intercourse, contaminated needles and transmission from an infected mother to her baby at birth or through breast milk. Screening of blood products for HIV in the developed world has largely eliminated transmission through blood transfusions or infected blood products in these countries.

HIV infection in humans is now pandemic. As of January 2006, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) estimate that AIDS has killed more than 25 million people since it was first recognized on December 1, 1981, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in recorded history. In 2005 alone, AIDS claimed an estimated 2.4-3.3 million lives, of which more than 570,000 were children.[3] A third of these deaths are occurring in sub-Saharan Africa, retarding economic growth and increasing poverty.[4] According to current estimates, HIV is set to infect 90 million people in Africa, resulting in a minimum estimate of 18 million orphans.[5] Antiretroviral treatment reduces both the mortality and the morbidity of HIV infection, but routine access to antiretroviral medication is not available in all countries.[6]

HIV primarily infects vital cells in the human immune system such as helper T cells (specifically CD4+ T cells), macrophages and dendritic cells. HIV infection leads to low levels of CD4+ T cells through three main mechanisms: firstly, direct viral killing of infected cells; secondly, increased rates of apoptosis in infected cells; and thirdly, killing of infected CD4+ T cells by CD8 cytotoxic lymphocytes that recognize infected cells. When CD4+ T cell numbers decline below a critical level, cell-mediated immunity is lost, and the body becomes progressively more susceptible to opportunistic infections. If untreated, eventually most HIV-infected individuals develop AIDS and die; however about one in ten remain healthy for many years, with no noticeable symptoms.[7] Treatment with anti-retrovirals, where available, increases the life expectancy of people infected with HIV. It is hoped that current and future treatments may allow HIV-infected individuals to achieve a life expectancy approaching that of the general public (see Treatment).
