Ditto to #1. AIDS is nothing new. It's not black-plague-old but it isn't new either.

As for a cure in the next 20-30 years...not necessarily. How long has the common cold been out there (much longer in existence than AIDS and also a virus) and still doesn't have a cure? The problem with viral diseases is that the virus mutates in order to survive. After a while, it becomes completely impossible to catch up with it in order to kill it and make a vaccine.

The best method of curing AIDS is society by society, responsibly. If every single person that is possibly at risk got tested regularly, that would be a start. Then those that are positive took preventative measures and used abstinence in order to avoid passing it on, lowering the instance of occurrence it might die out or slow down enough for us to vaccinate against it. Sadly, society is not becoming more responsible. With the promiscuous behavior and frivolous-over indulging and in-denial lifestyles we lead. I can't see this happening either.

If you look at how long cancer has been around, I won't hold hopes that we will have a cure for HIV soon. I love the idea, but I must be realistic.

You are right, if the viral load is low and the Tcell count is HIGH people can be HIV+ for years and not have AIDS. It's when the Tcell drop below 200 that it becomes an AIDS diagnosis. If there are a lot of opportunistic infections and the Tcell count is above 200 the Doctor can make an AIDS diagnose.

The best way to eliminate viruses is to vaccinate against them. Chronic viral infections are generally incurable. Due to HIV's mutagenic nature, current methods of developing vaccines are incapable of combating this. Maybe in the next 20-30 years someone will find a way to vaccinate against it.
