The 'secret cure for cancer' conspiracy theory is a game played by people who have not had or been close to cancer.

It won't burst anyone's bubble to hear that drug companies are motivated by huge profits rather than people's health; and any drug company discovering a cancer cure would make more money than they could have so far dreamed of making - fame and fortune beyond their wildest dreams.

Scientists, researchers and their families develop cancer at the same rate as the rest of the population - they would be dying or watching relatives die rather than revealing this secret cure.

Nobody else is hiding a secret cure either. Think about it:

Governments? Cancer costs governments huge amounts of money that would be saved if there was a cure. I live in the UK. I've had surgery chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone therapy. I didn't pay a penny for it, because we have a National Health Service, the state pays for our health care, including cancer care. Cancer treatments cost our government billions; if they could have cured me by giving me a once and for all cure, BELIEVE ME they would have. As it is, I could be back with a recurrence at any time to cost them many thousands more.

The medical profession? Every medical professional in the whole world would have agreed to keep existence of a cure secret. Every single one. One blabbermouth, one disgruntled researcher or sacked nurse and the whole conspiracy鈥檚 blown. Newspapers and other media wouldn't have got a sniff of it. Likely? -and is it likely that these people, who went into medicine to help people, would be conspiring to kill them? If they wanted to make a fortune, medicine was a very poor choice of career. And of course, medical professionals and their families also develop cancer at the same rate as the rest of the population.

And above all, in order to prove that any secret, hidden cure worked, or for anyone to know they were even getting close to a cure, several hundred people (minimum) would have to have been cured by it (otherwise how would its discoverers know it worked?). Every single one of these people would have to be keeping quiet about it鈥?not a word to the media from any of them, or any of their delighted relatives and friends.

No secret cure then. So why no cure yet? The problem with finding a cure is that cancer is not a single disease, it's an umbrella term for over 200 different diseases. The difficulty with finding a cure is that different cancers are caused by different things, so no one strategy can prevent them They all respond to different treatments so no one treatment can cure them, so there isn't a magic bullet that cures all cancers and there never will be.

But quite a few cancers CAN already be cured: seven out of ten children are cured of cancer; testicular cancer, Hodgkin's disease, and many cases of leukaemia can all be cured in adults with chemotherapy, most skin cancers are cured with surgery and many cases of thyroid cancer and cancer of the larynx are cured with radiotherapy.

Many other types of cancer are also cured if they are found early enough - three quarters of breast cancers found at stage one for example.

Yes there鈥檚 still a long way to go, but there is much dedicated hard work going on to find treatments and cures.

There are a number of reputable doctors who seriously believe the whole cancer research industry is a scam. Can you imagine just how many jobs around the world rely on not finding a cure for cancer. Watson (one half of Watson and Crick who discovered the structure of DNA) ran the National Cancer Research organization for a while and described it as 鈥渁 bunch of sh*t鈥? The drug companies want doctors to diagnose cancer and then order up a standard regime of chemotherapy drugs, which makes huge money for the drug companies. So long as they can point to one or two cases where they have cured the cancer, they continue to make huge amounts of money. I have a friend who was diagnosed with prostate cancer and his PSA was off the chart. He was told he did not have long to live and needed radical surgery and chemo. He said no and successfully treated it himself using diet, exercise and supplements. There are ways to treat cancer, it鈥檚 just that it doesn鈥檛 involve hugely expensive drugs, so the drug companies don鈥檛 want you to know about it. It is also a fact of life that chemo drugs suppress the immune system at a time when it needs to be boosted in order to naturally fight the cancer. Chemo drugs probably cause a huge amount of DNA damage to other wise healthy cells, so later, when the 鈥渃ancer returns鈥?it鈥檚 more likely to be as a result of the chemo drugs. Cancer is an industry and we will not get a cure for it as long as it generates such huge revenues.
