Is war good for medicine?

I'm writing an essay on how war is good for medicine. I'm using civil war, WWI, WWII, Korean war. I need a strong GENERAL introduction!! original intros are appreciated. I will rate the best one and it will earn you points.

For all its destructiveness, war also brings significant medical technological advances. From the Civil War to Iraq, war has been a great aid for American physicians and scientists alike. Hippocrates wrote, 鈥淗e who would become a surgeon should join an army and follow it.鈥?The truth is that destruction forces people to search for ways to prevent and cure their problems.

Male veterans have been researched on for decades now. While the end result can be also be seen in family dysfunction, erectile dysfunction research is included in research on diabetes, kidney and bladder diseases, prostate cancer, and heart disease etc... When their military service has ended, veterans keep on serving society with their involvement in research and study groups for the advancement of medical technology for everyone world-wide. Except in the area of prosthetics, most of the time veterans involvement in medical research does go unnoticed while drug companies become multi-billion-dollar industries with drugs like Viagra. Too many veterans have died as just another number in a research project.

As Sun Tzu said: "The art of war is of vital importance to the State." (Tzu ,9) War has been the biggest necessity to a nations science and technology. Since the start of the Civil War to the present Iraq War, America has dramatically improved in medicine. These improvement have been in surgery, vaccines, and in antibiotics. In order to win wars, one must have the medicines and technology.

I'm not going to write your paper for you (and who cares about points?), but consider mentioning something about necessity being the mother of invention. You could reference casualty stats and related advances, if you can find them. Prosthetics is a good place to look nowadays.
