Is there a cure for AIDS or are there any chances of survival somehow?

One of my friends has recently been diagnosticed with AIDS. I just can't accept that he is gonna die just like that. Any information about chances of curing are welcome and helpfull.

Don't assume he's just going to die in a year or whatever. Its not the death sentence we used to think it was. There are MANY people who have had this virus for 20 years or more! In fact, its come to be called "living with AIDS", with an emphasis on the word living.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

There is no cure for AIDS. However medication for HIV/AIDS these days is very good. If the HIV virus is detected early (to allow for monitoring and early intervention, as well as getting the right time to begin anti-viral treatment) people can live practically a normal life span.

While the progress of the virus also depends on the individual it is not the death sentence it used to be.

There is no cure, mainly because HIV mutates (changes) so much, (so one medicine would not kill all of the different strains of the virus), but these days, there are many treatments that can help people who have HIV (the virus that can lead to AIDS) live longer, healthier, and increase the amount of time between a diagnosis of HIV and diagnosis of AIDS (when the immune system is damaged so much that the person is susceptible to other infections such as colds, flu, and pneumonia). Once a person is diagnosed with full blown AIDS, any infection has the potential to kill them, but meds can still help increase length of life.
The length of time a person can live with HIV (before developing AIDS) and the length of time a person can live once diagnosed with AIDS, depend on many factors, including the health of the person before they were infected, their response to treatment, and their response to the virus itself, so it isn't possible to say for sure how long your friend will live. He should talk with his doctors and follow his treatment plan.

was he diagnosed with AIDS or HIV? that makes a difference. Most people diagnosed with HIV at a younger age will live to their 50's or 60's with proper medication maintenance. However if he has by passed HIV and has full blown AIDS the only thing he can do is try to get his Tcell count up and maintain it. That takes a lot of discipline--strict diet, strict medication regimen, keeping fit and going to the dr on a regular basis. Some people think it is a death sentence and start "wildn' out" and doing as they please but the truth is if they embrace it and make the changes they need to then their is no reason not to live a long, healthy life.
