What is the scientific term for discovery of something other then what you are intending to find?

An example would be finding the cure to say cancer while working on the cure for aids. Or finding a useful product (like diapers) while exploring space.
I need to know the term for this, I asked the professor if serendipity was the term she was looking for. She said yes and no. So its probably somewhat along those lines.

I agree with you that serendipity seems a good choice. But with respect to technology, the term "spin-off" has been used frequently, especially by NASA.
