Amytriptyline:- 40mg/night - how can I safely come off it alltogther?

I began taking Amytriptyline at 40mg doses per night for two reasons:-

1. I had a a sudden sensory loss that looked like MS but was never diagnosed as anything other than "loss of sensation" by a top neurologist. Amytriptyline aids nerve conduction but only a little.

2. Amytriptyline also assists sleep patterns - hence I take it at 11.30pm each night.

It has side affects : Slight loss of balance and slight sleepiness. Other areas also.

I have tried to come off it but when I lowered the dose to 20mg my mind seemed to tell me I couldnt sleep hence I didnt. I dont know how much of the lack of ability to fall off to sleep is simply due to the knowledge Im not on the drug and how much caused by the reduction ! Any thoughts ?

i work in an alchol and drug detox unit and it very dangerous to self medicate
you need to seek proffesional medical advice
each person is individual
in my work every persons detox is different
theres is never the same detox twice
as everyone is different

Seek medical advice, I have been taking fluoxetine for 13 months and wanted to come off it for a long time, I was advised not to and have only just recently been able to come off completely.
Its so easy to do more damage self medicating

I am on amytriptyline at the mo, and have been for 3yrs, i started on a 50mg dose, and they increased it as it was for depression so i went up to 75mg, anyway i too hav tried to decrease the dose and found i just couldnt sleep without it and my depression got worse and now im on 175mg each night and am not happy about it, i just do not function without it anymore, my advice is to be very careful and talk to your doctor you could take 25mg to start with and see how you get on. Im apparently over the max dose and dont know what im going to do to come off them as i hav a bad reaction every time i try to decrease its got a bit of a tricky situation for me so be very careful, hope this helps, good luck x

I was on that drug for 5yrs,and i had to reduce it slowly, eventually i came off it and went on to zopiclone.i have now come off that. And the best thing to help you sleep is Kalms Night time,i wish you luck your gp should help you.
