Is codene an appropriate sleep aid? |
I have chronic insomnia (among other things) and I cycle ambien and ativan as sleep aids. Those are the meds that help me too. I mostly rely on generic ambien (zolpidem) and generic ativan (lorazepam) because they are cheaper. I also found that Tussionex cough syrup (expensive prescription that contains codeine) helps me with sleep too and also when my chest feels tight (long story - exposed to mold). It worked a couple times for me, but not consistently. We have to get restorative sleep in order to function and maintain immune health. I think something happened to my hypothalamus (area of brain that controls sleep) from excessive stress when I was a teenager. But who knows?! Maybe it's a virus that attacks that part of the brain. At any rate, my sleep clock is definitely broken. I am thankful for the combo of meds and supplements that help me sleep! Sleep deprivation is a form of torture in POW camps! No, codiene is a narcotic pain reliever. Do not use it as a sleep aid. is codene not an ingredient in a specific drug No! It is an opiate, and very easy to become addicted to. I also have chronic insomnia. Ambien made me have very weird and psychotic thoughts. I found Ativan to be a strange drug too. One was not enough, but two turned me into a total zombie in the middle of the following day. My doctor finally prescribed 1 mg. of xanax before bed time. It works great for me. Just don't EVER abuse it and take more than prescribed. Always keep in mind that what works for one person may not work for you. When it comes to prescription medications, we are NOT all created equal. |
