Man to give birth. Your thoughts after reading this article?

Labor of Love
Thomas Beatie gives The Advocate a first-person account of how it feels to be pregnant and carrying a child for his wife and himself.

From The Advocate March 26, 2008
To our neighbors, my wife, Nancy, and I don鈥檛 appear in the least unusual. To those in the quiet Oregon community where we live, we are viewed just as we are -- a happy couple deeply in love. Our desire to work hard, buy our first home, and start a family was nothing out of the ordinary. That is, until we decided that I would carry our child.

I am transgender, legally male, and legally married to Nancy. Unlike those in same-sex marriages, domestic partnerships, or civil unions, Nancy and I are afforded the more than 1,100 federal rights of marriage. Sterilization is not a requirement for sex reassignment, so I decided to have chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy but kept my reproductive rights. Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire, but a human desire.

Ten years ago, when Nancy and I became a couple, the idea of us having a child was more dream than plan. I always wanted to have children. However, due to severe endometriosis 20 years ago, Nancy had to undergo a hysterectomy and is unable to carry a child. But after the success of our custom screen-printing business and a move from Hawaii to the Pacific Northwest two years ago, the timing finally seemed right. I stopped taking my bimonthly testosterone injections. It had been roughly eight years since I had my last menstrual cycle, so this wasn鈥檛 a decision that I took lightly. My body regulated itself after about four months, and I didn鈥檛 have to take any exogenous estrogen, progesterone, or fertility drugs to aid my pregnancy.

Our situation sparks legal, political, and social unknowns. We have only begun experiencing opposition from people who are upset by our situation. Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs. Health care professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognize Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy鈥檚 family doesn鈥檛 even know I鈥檓 transgender.

I think it's not as crazy as they make it out to be because technically this "man" is not a man.....he's a woman. They made it seem like it was an actual man that was giving birth to a child. I mean it's still kind of weird but not as weird as an actual man having a baby.

The "man" giving birth was a female with reproductive organs still intact. It's not as crazy as that Arnold Shwartzeneggar movie. I honestly don't know why I'm so desensitized to it but it's really no big deal.

I think thats not the same as a man having a baby. I wish them all the best.

Seems like you shouldn't be able to just switch back and forth between male and female to suit your current needs and wants. First she wanted to be a male and made the decision to switch and reaped the benefits of being a male. But then now wants a child so switches back to female. Sounds like they are self absorbed.

Um ewww.

I read this in one of the papers we take. It was quite an interesting article. Since the "man" was biologically a woman, it's not as amazing as the headline made it sound. I have to admit I wondered what kind of clothing will be worn during the pregnancy.

I think the world is gone to hell in a handbasket. WTH? Why on earth would you want to do that? If I said I wanted to pee standing up would someone find a way for me to do that? Get a hobby man.

i am confused about what this guys package looks like and how he's going to give birth, but figuratively speaking, he has some balls. i doubt there's ever been a better use for that extra uterus someone had lying around and i wish them the best of luck.
