Shivering and sweating could be a side effect or a disease symptom. I think it was drug withdrawal. Many people have contracted HIV through using uncleaned needles.
AIDS does not kill you. It lowers your immunity so you are subject to diseases like pneumonia or cancers.

The movie was written @ the height of the AIDS epidemic so the drug of choice back then was SMACK or heroine. Full blown AIDs doe cause fever, and chills however the sweating is usually done @ night. AZT is the first drug developed during the late 80's to fight the disease.

They smoked a lot of pot (Tom Colins mostly), drank and did heroin (Mimi). Heroin is what Mimi was trying to find in Roger's apartment during "Light My Candle". AZTs were drugs for HIV in the 80s. When Mimi is sweating, it was withdrawals from the heroin that she was trying to quit. When it was Angel, it seemed to be a side effect of whatever disease she had that eventually killed her. (Most AIDS patients die of something like pnemonia because of their weakened immune system)

RENT is one of my favorite movies, good choice :)
