i was confused about the drug/aids situation in the rent broadway show and the movei can su1m xplain what was with teh drugs

It's more than implied that both Roger and Mimi used heroin. Roger was a "half a year of withdrawal" according to Mark in the musical version, a "year out" according to Benny. Mimi uses throughout the musical and movie, but does go into rehab towards the end.
It's implied that that is how ROger and Mimi both got AIDS. In the musical version, Mark says:
"Close on Roger
His girlfriend April
Left a note saying "We've got AIDS"
Before slitting her wrists in the bathroom"

Collins and Angel both had AIDS as well, but we don't know how they contracted the disease.
