Would somebody with AIDS have a more successful organ transplant? |
People that receive donated organs must take immuno-suppressant drugs to stop their body from attacking the new organ. People with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome already have a suppressed immune system so would this mean that if they received a donated organ they would not have to take as many immune system suppressing drugs(or any at all)? Someone with AIDS would not have a more successful organ transplant. The aspect of immunosuppression is a fine balance between keeping the body from rejecting the new organs and not being so suppressed that your body can't fight any bacteria, viruses, etc. One of the causes of organ rejection is infection. With the AIDS suppressing the immune system too much the organ would be susceptible to rejection from the associated infections that the body can't fight. I think your theory is reasonably plausible. This makes a lot of sense... I love to find interesting questions here!! You've put a lot of thought into an interesting theory!! Have a *|s.|T.|a.|R.|* XxXxX I don't know the answer for sure, but I doubt it because physiologically there are 2 types of immunity : (1) humoral and (2) cellular. HIV affects cellular immunity and I think specifically T-4 helper cells that modulate infetcious disease(pneumonia bugs/fungal infections ect). Organ rejection can come about from both types of immunity. Once an organ is tagged as foreign the immune system will exert every response to destroy it so without a specific tissue match i.e. twin sibling or family member they would still have to make sure that the total immune system cannot respond. This is my best guess as I am not a human doctor. Not exactly. Some viruses thrive in an HIV environment (CMV, HSV, VZV) to name a few. Namely, under normal circumstances, where all 3-of these diseases would not be an issue in a non-HIV patient, they become a BIG problem in a HIV patient if the organ being donated is infected with one of these viruses. Namely, the chances you will have a problem are reduced, not more successful, at least where viruses are concerned. |
