What effect will Wal-mart's decision to lower drug costs............?

have on competing drug stores such as Walgreen's, CVS, Rite-Aid? Do you believe that we will see a decline in ALL Rxs as a result of this strategy?

I think the effect of this has been over blown.
This is not for every drug, it is for about 200 generic drugs, and it is only for customers that pay CASH (i.e. not covered by insurance) for the medication.

This impacts less than 5% of the prescriptions filled.

Time will Tell what will really happen. If it works or not. Just like Wal-Greens wants to build as close as they can to CVS. I found CVS is cheaper than Wal-Mart, Wal-Greens and Kroger. Report It

Stocks of all major pharmacies dropped yesterday on the news. Target matched Wal-Mart's prices this morning.

It will ruin the average drug store..Typical Walmart strategy

Yes, competition in the market place works. When competitors of Walmart see their volume of drug business decline, they will do what they can to keep customers.

Not much effect. Walmart does NOT carry ALL the generic drugs and not to mention, alot of people, including myself, still will NOT shop at Wal Mart.

Will be great. I bet it will work out. Plus if it's only in one state for now. Everybody within a day trip will go there to buy the drugs.. When you have to pay $29.00 dollars now. $29.00 a month times 3 = $87.00 Same drug for $4.00 times 3 = $12.00. I would save $75.00. In three months. I would take a trip in my car that gets 45 mpg. Be a 1607 mile round trip. But now I have other drugs I get too. One I wouldn't save on because it only cost me $5.00 for 3 months now. But if my doctor places me on this other drug I know I will be taking and if I can get it for $4.00 I would save a lot of money each month.

It will kill Mom and Pop pharmacies. The national chains will be forced to compete, but may increase the prices on other items to help recoup difference.

I do not agree at all with the person that said this is overblown. There are 120 medications, with differing dosages making for 291 products that WM is selling for $4. The list includes many popular diabetes, asthma, and high blood pressure meds. I have insurance and have a $10 co-pay on generics. Now, it wouldn't be worth it to me to hassle with going to WM to save $6 on one drug, but if I took a lot of meds and/or had very limited finances..you better believe I'd be going there.

We can only hope.
