Why might a person who has abused a drug be more likly to get aids than a person who has not?

it is a part of my health homework

Two major ways:

1. If they've abused drugs, they may at some point have shared needles, which is one of the major ways that HIV is transmitted. If someone with the HIV virus injects himself with drugs and then someone else uses the same needle, the second person could (and probably would) be infected with the virus.

2. People who have abused drugs may have had episodes in their past where they did things, while under the influence of drugs, that they wouldn't ordinary do, such as engage in risky sex, which is another major way that HIV is transmitted. In some cases the person may later not even remember what they did, so they may be carrying the virus and not even realize that they were exposed to it.

In general addicts/drug abusers don't think straight and put themselves at risk in any of a number of ways every day. They are hanging around with other drug users, which is a very high-risk group for HIV infection, and are vulnerable because they need money and drugs and their minds aren't working correctly.

Sharing a needle with an AIDS infected individual.

They are more likely to use a dirty needle from someone who has AIDS. Also, they are more likely to sell their bodies to get the money to buy the drugs...

Because people who use drugs are known to share needles.

Use of dirty needles, the exchange of body fluids. All ways to get HIV.

Sharing needles!!!!

drugs weaken ur immune system...so when aids becomes present its more likely to get it.

This is not the place for doing your homework, and I won't let you cheat yourself by giving you the answers.

Use any search engine. That way, you'll also be able to cite your sources.

The person who is high, could
1 share an infected needle or
2 if you are high you are more likely to have unprotected sex which can spread disease also.

At the top of my head,

1. Sharing a needle with an infected person.
2. Recreational drugs are often used during sex - lowered inhibitions and mental state encourages unsafe sex with infected partners.
3. Drug addicts are often in the sex trade - either forced into it, or they into it to get money for drugs.

Hope it helps.

Partly because drugs have an effect on your body, leave it in less than perfect condition. Also, if the drug was through needles, the virus may have been transmitted then but lay dormant for years.

It's the lifestyle of a drug addicted person.Hanging around with other drug addicts, getting high and not caring about safe sex practices.Increasing risky behavior to get high, and graduating to the different means of ingesting the drugs, from smoking or snorting to shooting up with a dirty syringes. When that happens it's not a matter of maybe getting HIV and Hepatitis B,it's a matter of how soon you get infected. Then you are a health risk to your family, and friends.Living the rest of your life infected, sick, and dying many years too soon. Take care. SW RNP

The body's immune system is based primarily on two parts: the biological portion, which includes the white blood cells, antibodies, etc.; and the metabolic portion, which includes the adrenal glands, as well as various hormones which regulate salt & calcium levels (known as electolytes).

The two portions work in harmony with each other, and damage to one portion will cause an imbalance in the other. These imbalances will cause your immune system to become compromised, leading to an increase in the number of times, as well as the severity of infections.

Certain drugs, like crack cocaine, will permanately alter the body's ability to produce stress hormones, such as cortisol. Without cortisol, your body cannot respond to infections with the same level of intensity as in a non-drug user. Meth will cause a user to function without the sleep necessary to recharge the body, making infection more likely and more severe. Alcohol interfers with the liver's ability to remove bacterial toxins from the blood, making septic infections more severe.

Hope this helps.

Ok so when someone is addicted to drugs their common sense is basically gone. Therefore they might sleep with people without protection for money or drugs and also using dirty needles. Many times people get so high that they have no idea who the even slept with the night before.
