I take the med xanax .5 mg. the past two days i have taken valium at 2mg?

These medications relieve my anxiety. However I take OTC meds to sleep (active ingredient in antihismine meds like bendyrl). the xanax and valium take away my anxiety and panic attacks but the OTC meds actually make me fall asleep. i have no idea why the other two anxiety/panic relief meds don't put me to sleep..it's frustrating..is it safe to mix these class of anxiety drugs with OTC sleeping aids?

Minor tranquilizers (such as Valium, Librium, Xanax, and Tranxene) and sleeping pills (such as Dalmane, Restoril, Ambien, Lunesta, and Sonata) are widely prescribed. However, these medicines can cause problems, including memory loss, addiction, and injuries from falls caused by drug-induced unsteadiness. In rare cases, people taking these medicines have done activities, such as driving and eating, while still asleep. These medicines also can cause a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). Therefore, you should use these medicines with caution.

Minor tranquilizers can be effective for short periods of time. However, long-term use is often of limited value and introduces the risk of addiction and mental impairment.

Sleeping pills may help for a few days or a few weeks, but using them for more than a month generally causes more sleep problems than it solves. For other approaches, see the topic Sleep Problems.

If you have been taking minor tranquilizers or sleeping pills for a while, talk with your doctor about whether you can stop taking the medication or reduce your dosage. If you have experienced any unsteadiness, dizziness, memory loss, or signs of an allergic reaction, tell your doctor.

This medication may cause dependence, especially if it has been used regularly for an extended period of time, or if it has been used in high doses. In such cases, if you suddenly stop this drug, withdrawal reactions including seizures may occur. Report any such reactions to your doctor immediately. When stopping extended, regular treatment with this drug, the dosage should be gradually reduced as directed to help prevent withdrawal reactions. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

Though it is very unlikely to occur, this medication can also result in abnormal drug-seeking behavior (addiction/habit-forming). Do not increase your dose, take it more frequently, or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed. Properly stop this medication when so directed. This will lessen the chances of becoming addicted.

When used for an extended period, this medication may not work as well and may require different dosing. Talk with your doctor if this medication stops working well.
