For a discount price or take payments. My sister is ready to loose her girls to a drug dealing sociopath because we have no money. And he does The legal aid here in montana is so backed up and under funded that they can't help. He has managed to take the kids. He has had them for a month. No one will help her. We don't know what to do. He is so mentally abusive to her and the kids. He is supposed to let them call and such and he won't. He is a two time felon for selling drugs. He is still on parole. My sis got 1 DUI and he convinced family court to take them with one hour supervised visits once a week. She is all the girls know. What do we do. I have heard of this sort of thing happening and no one cares. Why. Is there no such thing of a lawyer who will donate work sometimes. We donate our time to different things.

I am sorry that your sister is in such a fix, but please do not blame it on the lawyers. For most lawyers it is NOT a matter of how much injustice there is in a case, it is a matter of getting paid. Lawyers, just like you, must pay for their rent, utilities, food, cars, gas, etc. Lawyers DO NOT get a free ride on anything with a law degree, in fact most are in debt for thousands for their education. It is very sad and totally in error that the media portrays the legal profession as people who just have so much money that they do not need to get paid for their work.

Besides you local legal aid, there may be other institutions that can help you. You should contact all Bar Associations in your state. Yes, these are organizations that lawyers belong to. Most of these groups will be able to direct you to other places for legal assistance. Some of the Bar Associations also have a list of attorneys who will work for a limited or no fee. You can access nationwide bar associations on the internet, don't know if they can help.

You may also want to contact any law schools in your state. Some law schools have clinics where supervised law students can work on cases. Finally your state assistance agency (the one that issues food stamps, etc.) may have some leads on assistance.

Right now with both Federal Government and State Government cut backs there is less money for legal assistance. So many of the legal aid groups are drying up for lack of funding.

Finally you may want to contact a law firm and ask if they ever do pro bono or contingency work. Please, remember you are asking for a favor, couching your request with an attitutude of 'you lawyers make so much money' or 'you won't take my case because it is not sufficient injustice' will get you nowhere. This is a time where 'please and thank yous' are necessary. Good luck.
