What would most likely happen if I took my parent's prozac?

My parents don't want me taking a chemical medicine for depression like prozac, but the weird hippy-ish kind they gave me isn't working. I mean, st. john's wort worked okay at first, but it just doesn't seem like it anymore. So I stopped taking them. & I was just going through our drug cabinet looking for a sleeping aid and I found like, 5 different kinds of anti-depressants, prozac being one of them. the rest are expired, I think. But what would happen if I took them, like.. daily, or whatever dosage it has for my parents? I'm fourteen and I have been diagnosed with depression, along with an anxiety disorder. But please, someone who actually knows if it'll work or probably just give me weird side effects, let me know? thank you.

I know that I won't be able to tell much of a difference until it's had enough time to get through my system thoroughly, but thanks anyway.

Its hard to say. Everyone's body chemistry is different. I was allergic to wellbutrin, but a friend of mine was on it and it worked wonderfully!

I don't suggest you toy around with any meds but realistically, you'll probably be fine. But seriously, I'm no expert. If you're still taking the st. john's wort, there could be serious drug interactions, so to reiterate, i dont suggest you try the prozac.

Try talking to your parents. Maybe they don't realize the extent of you depression. Let them know how badly you want relief from your symptoms.

Also, do some research on SAM-e and bring it up to them. Its a supplement that can treat depression and they'll probably be all for it. It might help you feel better too. If you try it and you dont feel any better, make sure you let them know how crappy you're feeling. Its your body and your mind; they may not know how it feels to be so down in the dumps.

Some SSRI's (prozac is one) are very bad for young adults and worse for teens. They can make the depression much worse and cause suicidal tendencies. I do NOT recommend it.

The Prozac isn't going to do anything good for you, and might be harmful. First of all, you don't know what dosage works for you. Second, you need to take it for maybe 2 months before it has an effect, and you'll run out of pills before that happens, and then you'll be in withdrawal. Also, when you first start taking it, you get very agitated, which can be dangerous. I suggest you go to the school nurse and talk to her about your problems with depression and anxiety and see if she can think of a way to convince your parents to let you see a psychiatrist to get treated! While your parents aren't listening to you, they might listen to her, another adult.
