FAFSA HELp??????

My girlfriend has a really big problem. First of all, her mom is a presumptous, undesirable, nonhelping, good for nothing, pyschopathic, rage problem, and most of all she hates me (the boyfriend, which is me). I wanted to know if my girlfriend would be able to move out of her house at her age of 17. She has been battered, abused, and stripped of the most prominent rights of general human customs. Also, the fafsa problem is probably the outright hugest problem in this issue. She is currently a junior, and of course is planning to attend a university. The dilemma is: her mom will morethanlikely not comply with the financial aid process. My girlfriend really wants to succeed and I know this just by looking at her ambitions. But, in a very controversial feature, her mom has said before that she will indeed not provide her tax information. Can she move out (btw she is a texas resident)? Can her mom be arrested for her unwillingness? Please I need answers!!!! Immediately!

Even if she moves she will still have to have her parental information for her FAFSA. She has to either be married, 24, or lived on her own for 3 years (i think) to not have to have parental information on the FAFSA. As far as her moving out goes, in most states she can if she wants to. After the age of 16, a minor can leave home. The problem is where she goes. If she moves in with, say, you, you can be charged with all kinds of charges because she is still a minor. This sounds like an issue for social services if things are as bad as you say. Or if that is not an option, she may just have to stick it out until her 18th birthday. As far as the FAFSA goes, there is no law that can force her mother to provide the tax information. This is a question for the financial aid advisor at whatever school she wishes to attend. They would be more up to date on the laws and what can be done. If she truly wants to go to school, she will find a way. I hope everything works out for her.

can someone be arrested for not giving out thier income information? no, i'm sorry it doesn't work like that. if your girlfriend is being abused at her house then I suggest she move out and find somewhere else to stay, maybe with you. as for the FAFSA, not everyone who applies for aid has access to thier parents information, so she should ask a counselor how she can do it.

Here's the thing, if her mother claims her as a dependent on her taxes, then the FAFSA will demand to know the mother's income. However, if your girlfriend makes it clear to her mother that she will be filing taxes on HER OWN behalf and will not allow her mother to claim her, then she is considered "independent" of her parents and doesn't have to put anything down but her own income. If her mother disregards this and tries to claim her anyway, then your girlfriend can call the IRS and turn her mother in for tax fraud.

At 17 she CAN move out ,and her mom CAN tell her she can't move back in.

Given her history she needs to talk to a school counselor about the rest of her problems. They will explain her rights to her and what can be done.

When she talks to the financial aid dept. at her University they will explain what can be done when a parent won't give tax info in cases like this. Believe me they have had this problem before!!!
