Online education?

Has anyone ever taken a masters degree course online? I am interested in taking up internet courses for my masters degree The school that I choose may not be in my state. Where and how would I be able to check to see that the school is reputable. Does finanical aid cover online schools. If you have any information, please share.

since i got my master's degree remotely (i was in ny, the school was in mass) and now teach in a distance-learning program, i can help you out with this. i won't reiterate the already sound advice regarding accreditation, but make sure you follow it.

many "traditional" colleges and universities are offering online degree programs, as they have seen that the demand is very high right now, and it uses fewer or their resources, while still generating the same amount of revenue. i've posted a couple of links below to help get you started.

financial aid does cover online programs, just as it would a residency program. since you'll be in graduate school, the only federal aid you'll be eligible are loans. however, there are always scholarships available, if you're willing to take the time and effort to track them down. i did, and it was well worth it, because i'm not saddled with as much student loan debt right now.

The issue is not whether it is 'reputable'. The issue is whether it has 'regional accreditation'. This is the same type of accreditation that regular universities must have. The name of the accrediting body reflects the region that it covers; i.e. - New England States Association, Northwest States Association, etc. Do a search on the terms 'online degree' or 'non-traditional degree' combined with 'regional accreditation' and you will get more info. A school that you are considering will be able to tell you right away if they are regionally accredited. If they are not sure, confused, or tell you some other type of accrediting body ('distance-learning accreditation'), be forewarned.
