Do i need my parents to fill out a fasfa form? Why do i need them?

Hello, I'm filling out the fasfa forms for financial aid for collage. I don't want them paying for my education and i would rather the debt be on my shoulders. I'm not in the position to pay for my education now but i will be in the future. Why can do i need to put there tax information and everything down? is there any financial aid i can file on my own? I'm new to all this. thanks



PS: I also think they make a lot of money so it would be less financial aid money for me.

Putting your folks info on the fafsa does not mean they will be required to help pay for your school or take out loans for you. The law says that anyone under 24 who is not married, has kids, is not an orphan or ward of the court, does not have a bachelors degree or children they support has to list their parents income. Being classified as "dependent" or "independent" doesn't actually mean your are dependent or independent of them. It just means you fall under one or the other category.

fasfa will determine how much $$ the govt. will give you for college.. basically, its free money (if you need it)

If your parents list you as a dependent on their taxes you have to enter their information on the FAFSA, but if you live on your own and file your own taxes the parent information is optional.

well if you are under 24 you can not claim yourself as a independent, so in that case you will have to fill out your parents tax information too..
I know that is very unfair but those are the government rules, if you parents do earn a lot of money (like mine) and you don't get much aid because of that (like me) you can try and fill out for scholarships and also try for private loans, one thing with private loans is that they look at your credit history, which if you are in high school might not be that good

are you under 24? did you file for income tax ?and do you have any children? If any of these are yes then you should be able to do this on your own
