Is a Parent fit if he/she involves a child in fraud? |
Scenario - child applying for financial aid with assistance from one parent. All financial information pertaining to the family is supposed to be included. The parent purposely hides information and the child is aware of what has been omitted and knows it should be included. This causes a calculation of the expected family contribution score to be low enough that the child can receive a grant of federal funds that covers all tuition, books, and fees plus additional funds for living expenses which is received by the child and doesn't have to be repaid. They both signed the application and in doing so are saying all required information has been provided. The grant is approved and the funds are given to the child. The parent also lets the child know that there is nothing to worry about indiating that a person in the child's situation will not be looked at so there will be no reprecussions for not providing all required information. Was this parent right or wrong; is this a fit parent? Well this is an interesting question. I wish to give my "two cents" worth. In my opinion a parent is supposed to be the moral guardian of his/her children. So is it right for him/her to not provide all the required information just so the child will have a better opportunity to further his/her education? In that I have to give an unequivical "NO" even if the likelihood of being caught is next to nil. By manipulating the information so the child is able to obtain aid he/she is not entitled to is basically what the question indicates, fraud. This is basically stealing from the tax payers. Compare this to someone stealing your identity and emptying your bank account to fund their education. Now is that a correct thing to do? Should we way Yay because the child will get a break and a better life while hurting the person they are stealing from? I guess irishgitana didn't think about that when she gave her answer. As far as the fitness goes I have to agree with her thought in that it's a sticky issue. More information will have to be known before I can give my opinion on that answer. don't even have to read anything but the first line. Legally, that's kind of sticky. But the likelihood of getting caught is also minimal. Explain very carefully to this student what you did and why and know that if you are already a grandparent, you know that "the system" is neither fair nor just. If that grandchild gets a great education, and gets a leg up in life because of what you did... hooray. And I am one law-abiding woman. If, for some unfathomable reason, someone catches you (I swear they won't) get it off of the student and tell them she/he didn't read it before signing. Education, yay! |
