What can I do for financial aid? |
I haven't yet filed for FAFSA. I'm going but I have to include my parent's income information because under FAFSA guidelines, I am dependent. Of course I have seen my parents only twice in the past two years; they have not contributed a dollar since I moved out. I pay rent, tuition, living expenses, etc on my own. Extra details: I didn't file for my last income. I will file this next year. Same thing happen to me. I am a 22 year old student and I have lived on my own since I was 17. I haven鈥檛 seen my dad in 6 years and have only seen my mom twice in the past 4. You have to be 24 to claim as an independent. I asked the financial aid office if there was anything I could do to be a dependant and they said no not for the next 2 years. I just asked my mom to fill out the FASFA with me. All your folks would have to do is fill out there tax info; the loans would still be in your name. You can't get Fed loan without filling out a FASFA. You can get privte ones, but they are pricey and hard to get without good credit. I was able to only declare my own income on financial aid because my parents quit claiming me on their tax forms. The FAFSA is the first step for most financial aid. There is a certain age cut off, I believe when a student no longer needs to include parental income statements, but any financial aid that is based on need requires some sort of form. There are scholarships that target certain types of people, like athletic scholarships, but more and more, the FAFSA is the first step towards getting financial aid. The most common student loans are Federally Insured and the FAFSA is required to get these as well. There are some private loan companies and banking institutions that profess to loan money for college. The process there is much like that for any loan. Loans of any kind can affect your credit rating and you should be careful about studying now and paying later. |
