Why is there often a reference to the "kool aid" drink in south central and californian hip-hop movies ?

i know in american litterature brands of the drinks are important.... just as a chateau or any territory information would be important in france....
ok for chester himes books and others...
now for movies ? only thing i noticed is that kool aid
is it all kids having it ? is it something special with los angeles?
