Is america optimistic or pessimistic?

I am just wondering what the average American would say to this question...Is America a optimistic or pessimistic when viewing other countries? I suppose it could go both ways but what is your opinion. For example when you think of India do you think of poverty, corruption, population problems, crowded streets and Aids...Or do you think of 420 million middle class, second fastest growing economy(in every field), 52 billionaires, 100,000 millionaires, 350 English speakers, Information technology/ systems, pharmaceuticals and film/media industry...I just want to know whether the average American thinks of the positives of every country before the negatives or if they only see the negatives. What is your view on this?

Most people I know are pessimistic on most subjects.
