Can someone help with financial aid?

Hi,

I've been trying to calculate my family's efc because my parents are not good with computers and their english isn't too strong. I have tried using an efc calculator but most require a lot of information that I don' t have readily available and its hard to ask my parents when I don't know what they are.

So are there charts/tables out there that will give me an estimate of my efc before I have to fill out all those forms? If it helps my parents make 80k together or something like that...but my dad's job is not consistent- he might get laid off soon =( so if that happens (hopefully not) will i be able to fix my financial aid sitution?

Fill out the FAFSA at fafsa.ed.gov.
Use your parent's taxes from last year and you will get an estimated efc. Then when they file their tax for this year, go back and correct your fafsa for your real EFC.

There should be a section with comments for unusual circumstances. There you can explain your fathers upcoming situation. Good Luck

It's hard to answer a question like that without the documents...Does your school have a counselor, or someone who can help you with the form? Also, try calling the financial aid office at a local college or the one you want to go to. They will be able to help you.

Get with a Financial Aid Counsellor at school, they will help you fill out the forms. Your parents will have to give you copies of their tax returns as proof. Get help from the FA office. Good Luck.

if you are planning on filling out the FAFSA, they have an online worksheet to help you calculate what you need to know, you just need last years tax return info for you and your parents. You can also save your FAFSA worksheet online and finish it later if you don't have all the info. You could also contact the college you are planning to attend for help.

it's called professional judgement and depending on your FA officer they may or may not make changes to your FAFSA. go ahead and fill it out (FAFSA) and submit. if/when your father gets laid off then you can contact them about adjusting your parent's income. they will still take into account any unemployment, etc., that he may get. at 80k, you are not likely to be eligible for the pell grant and the change in your father's income would have to be siginficant in order for it to make any kind of impact on your efc.

unlike anonymous said, if you are filling it out for the current academic year you MUST use your 2006 tax return. you will use your 2007 tax return for the 08-09 academic year.
