FAFSA/Financial Aid Question..?

My parents no longer claim me on their taxes, so I am no longer a dependent... So does that mean that I will be eligible to receive more aid when I fill out the FAFSA? Or am I still going to have to fill out all of the family information and get an EFC number? thanks..

Also does it make a difference that family won't help pay for costs for college? Because then that would make all of the questions about my parents bank info completely irrelevant if they dont help....

I am on fafsa. You have to make poverty guidelines to get the free pell grants.

Not to mention over 25 yrs old.

I have the same problem. Your parents claim you until you're 24 regardless of your dependent or independent status. I talked to my school because I'm 23 and have lived 2000 miles away from my parents for 4 years with no help yet because I'm under 24 I still have to include my parents income on my FAFSA. Sucks doesn't it?! It's a federal law though so it will apply to you as well.

It does not matter if they don't claim you on their taxes, if you don't live with them, or that they don't/won't help pay for your education.

Until you are 24 years old, married, have kids that you support, are a veteran, are an orphan, have a bachelors degree or if you were a ward of the court until the age of 18 you are considered a "Dependent" and must put your parents income on your fafsa. In doing so, this does not obligate your parents in paying for your education.
Here is a good publication about federal student aid.

When it comes to the FAFSA, your parents income is just a criteria to how much the federal government assumes you can pay yourself, if any at all. It is state law, that you must submit income information until you are 24. FAFSA assumes, by the age of 24, you already have your bachelors degree
