How do I escape this paranoia?


I always feel something is about to go wrong; that someone or some event is going to hurt me or ruin my life. For instance, I am afraid to tell others personal details about me for fear they will use that information againt me. Also, I am constantly in fear of catching diseases (including AIDS and Hepatitis) from doing normal things like going to the store or shaking someone's hand. I always act extra cautious about everything I do and say as if the slightest wrong move could be the end of me. How do I get over this?

You're right, this is paranoia.
The best solution would be to seek therapy, because this fear is starting to impact your daily life.
The next best solution is education. Look at the scientific research relating to your fears - not every nut with a website, but the real, professional, unbiased research.

For example, there is absolutely NO WAY you can get AIDS from shaking hands or going to the store. AIDS has to be transmitted by fluid, and dies quickly when it comes into contact with air. You can even kiss or share drinks with an HIV-infected person - the presence of HIV in saliva is so minute no one's ever been infected that way.

Do the research and keep reminding yourself of the facts. Write down your fears, and then check back to see if they came true - you'll be reassured to see all the times that things DIDN'T go wrong.

sounds like anxiety or some other mentel health issue, maybe OCD. I would check with your doctor, meds might be needed or try to find a book on phobias or anxiety.

You probably realize that these fears don't really make much sense, but you still fear them anyhow. Usually when this occurs, its because the chemicals in your brain that control mood and thinking are a little out of balance with each other. There are three types approaches commonly used to deal with this.

One approach is to learn how to recognize and override fears that are exaggerated - this approach is called cognitive therapy. Cognitive therapy works very well for some people and not so well for others. People can learn cognitive therapy techniques on their own, but it helps to see a psychologist to learn how to do this.

Another approach is through medications. Some people respond very well to antidepressants or other types of medication. Medicines are a trial-and-error process. A person often has to try several different medications before finding one that has the desired effects with the least side effects. It can be a little discouraging sometimes when a person has to try one medication after another to find one that works, but it usually pays off after a while for most people.

A third approach is some combination of the the previous two things - this is often the most effective approach.

you are experiencing paranoid delusions. How long has this been going on? You should go seek a psychiatrist or some type of therapy in order to prevent this from taking away from your daily life and overall happiness.

Depending on how long this has been going on, you could say that you are demonstrating characteristics of schizophrenia (if for more than 6 months) or it could be schizoform.

Also you are showing some signs of Obsessive compulsion.
