Has anyone here ever gotten surgery, for hearing loss??

Or does anyone know information for that? I am 22 years old, and wear hearing aids, but I really want surgery, is it safe? Thank you.

Rush Limbaugh had cochlear implants put in because he lost his hearing completely. He now got it back.

Has your doctor mentioned surgery? Only certain cases can be operated on.
My Mum had surgery years ago - but she still had to wear a hearing aid in one ear.
But it was sucessful in the other ear.

What?

There are two basic categories of surgery for hearing loss: Cochlear Implants (for severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss) and various different surgeries for conductive hearing loss. I presume you are referring to cochlear implant surgery, if you are not, please repost your question with the name of the type of surgery you are considering.

Cochlear implants have been approved by the FDA for over 20 years. There are over 100,000 cochlear implant users worldwide. They are routinely done in children as young as 12 months of age. Other than the regular risks associated with anasthesia, there is the risk of post surgery vertigo or tinnitus, but these conditions are usually temporary. There is a slightly higher chance that you might contract meningitis after the cochlear implant surgery, so you must be up to date on all your vaccinations, especially meningitis vaccinations.

It is important to understand that cochlear implantation will destroy any residual hearing that you have in that ear, because the electrode that is placed in your cochlea is providing an alternative mechanism for stimulating your auditory nerve. It is equally important to understand that the success that you have with the implant AFTER surgery primarily depends on following a rigerous audiology and therapy program for at least 12 to 18 months following the surgery.
