Can I File Financial Aid Independantly?

My mom is moving to another state with her new husband. They were not married when I filed my FAFSA the first time, but I know that he will not provide his information for me to get financial aid. If I am going to file myself independantly on my taxes, is there anyway I can do that for my FAFSA?

there is a section on the FAFSA that determines whether or not you are a dependent or independent student. Can you answer yes to any of these questions?

are you 24?
are you married?
do you have children or other dependents whom live with you and that you provide more than 50% financial support for?
are you a veteran?
are you or were you an orphan/ward of the court up till age 18?
are you working on a master's/doctorate program?

Unfortunately, if you answer no to all of those questions, which I'm guessing you do, you will have to use your parents information. For financial aid purporses, if your mother is legally married, that would be your mother and stepfather's income information.

The only exception is called a Dependency Override and this can only be approved and processed by your financial aid office. This means that they are choosing to make you independent due to extenuating circumstances even though you normally meet the qualifications as a dependent student. Students who qualify for a Dependency Override usually have parents with some sort of history of abuse/drugs/etc. that can be attested to by a professional (counselor, minister, etc.), or other situation that would make it harmful for them to be in touch with their parents. A good example of this would be a student whose mother was in jail because of drug use and who has never known their dad--we would never make this student have to get their parent information because that would be impossible. If you do not have a situation like that (and it sounds like you don't) then you must use your parents information still.

I think you have to be 25 to do that.

They are just plain evil if they wont even give you the info.

They should send some money for books too.

You should call the FAFSA hot line.

I was in a situation similar to yours. You can talk to a FAFSA representative about your situation until you're blue in the face, but she'll just tell you that in order to file independently you have to be 24, parents dead, or be legally emancipated. It's crazy, I know.
