Church/Community Service?

How come when filling out financial aid papers, scholarship papers, or honor society papers we are told that church work doesn't count as community service, when in essence the same work is being done. Instead, we are expected to list specific organizations we have worked with. Well, that's kind of bragging, isn't it? And besides, if someone is filling out this information for scholarships or aid, then don't you think that these people might not have the money or means of transportation to get to these places to put these services on their forms?

Because church work is for your own benefit.

Grantit it does help the community it is basically meant for God.

Community Service is meant for the common ppl.

Make Sense?

Hope this helps.

Yes, it is a catch 22.
Some people don't have transportaiton, so can't get to volunteer and it is counted against them.
There should be a place on the app that you can put church activities.
If there is not, make sure that you mention it in your interview, if you are going for one.
If one is filling out scholarships for a certain college that is church related, then they do ask.
But, Government does not see church as community service because it is "church" and there is a separation of church and state.
Besides, they don't see churches as being that consistent.

It's typical secular society trying to get the faintest hint of religion or religious work out of our lives. It's sad!

May be, but financial aid is done that way, and there is nothing we can do about it. And plus let me tell something I am not saying I am poor, but just because I work I don't get financial aid. There are kids who are from wealthier families and wear gucci purses that can full financial aid to pay off their college and on top of that book vouchers to pay for the books, now plz tedll me is that fiar.

I don't make the rules, but I can see where they come from.

"Church Service" might be knocking on doors like the Jehovah's Witnesses. They consider it a valuable task the Lord directed them to do. Most people consider it an annoyance.

Reading to the blind or serving food to the homeless or organizing a cleanup at your town's park might annoy someone, somehow, but chances are most people would be happy you did it. Lots and lots of "Church Service" - teaching Sunday School, maintaining a church web site, playing guitar at Youth Services - only benefits members of the church. "Community" service should benefit people regardless of their religion.

>> Well, that's kind of bragging, isn't it?
Not if you tell the truth. If you have a 4.0 GPA and scored 1600 on the SAT's, you would tell them about it.

I'll pass on the transportation. When she was in high school, my daughter walked to an elementary school after school to tutor kids. I picked her up from there.
