How to file for financial aid w/o parent's input...? |
I am currently 22 and have not lived at home in over two years, yet many schools are telling me that I need my parents information still to for financial aid purposes...is there any way to avoid this because I am basically on my own for my schooling costs. You will still need your parents' info until you are 24, but the FAFSA will ask you if you are a dependant. I have been on my own since I was 18. It asked for my parents info, but I was not claimed as a dependant on anyones taxes. If your parents still claim you as a dependant, then you have to use their info. If you are not 24, have dependents, married, in the military, have a BA, or are declared a ward of the state you have to have your parents info on your fafsa. The only other thing you can do is appeal this with your financial aid office by proving that you have no relationship with your parents at all. This is difficult to do and you have to have proof of this. I suggest you just talk to your parents and ask them to give you their tax information. who will stand us ur gaurdian?/ It sucks, I fought this battle as well. The harsh truth is that you have to put them on your FAFSA. Unless you have a child you a destined for debt just to do things the correct way. It almost seems like the government punishes the middle class for not being complete screw ups or filthy rich. Oh yeah, I finally turned 24 and no longer need my mom's income and if you make more than 20000 a year you are too rich for them to help and that is for 2 people. Couldn't imagine what it is for one. Good Luck!! No, you must use your parents information. According to FAFSA, living out of your parents home and financialy providing for yourself does not classify you as independent. Eventhough you are own when it comes to paying for college, you have to use your parent's information. Sorry |
