If I am considered a dependant student, can I get financial aid?

I am considered a dependant student and want to file for financial aid. Problem is, my parents refuse to give their information to the financial aid office stating that its ludicrous for them to have to submit their information when I'm 21 and living on my own.

Yes, you can get financial aid as a dependent student. Also, you must be 24 years old, or have childern, or be married, or be a veteran to be considered an independent student. However, there are special conditions that could deam you independent, like your parents abandon you when you were young or something of extreme factors. The counselor can do a dependent override, if parents refuse to give their information.

Try other institute that pay you stipend agains some work. Or find a part time job.

So long as your parents declare you a deduction on their income tax, or so long as they are paying your tuition, you are dependent. Once they can no longer claim you or pay your fees, then you are free to use your own financial records. Talk to your school office to understand exactly why they are asking for your parents information.

If you are living on your own than you are not a dependent student. You can file as independent, but if your parents are supporting you, you will have to supply there information. And what is the difference anyway your parents will be submitting only there tax information which is already submitted to government anyway. But if you have to use your parents information don't plan on getting much because there are too many families that make almost nothing and the less made the more they get and the less you get.

If you dependent then you need their info, but if you were filing as independent which you should be doing since you live on your own then you would not need you parents information....
