Can I invest the money from my stafford loans?

I recently got my finacle aid information in and found that the cost of my tuition and fee's and books will be pretty much be paid for by grants and stipends(I'm going to a cheap state school) however I am also offered 3,500 a year in susibized stafford loans. From what I've seen, there is no pentatly in paying off these loans early, so I wondered if anyone knows if this money is allowed to be invested? It seems wise to me to borrow the money and invest it while I'm going to school and then re-pay it immediatly after my 6 month grace period. Just wanted to know if anyone else has done this or if there is a stipulation against it.

Legally, no. When you take the govts fa money you are agreeing that the money is being spent on educational expenses. Are they going to find out you are investing it, probably not. But if they do, there could be consequences.

You can do anything that you want. But be warned, taking out student loans when you don't need the money is tempting. I just don't understand why you would take out the loans unless you need them. If you can get through your BA without debt, you'll have an easier time taking out the loans you'll likely need for graduate school. So many people I know never pursue graduate or post graduate degrees because they took advantage of loan money they didn't need early and blew it on fun stuff.

Investments aren't guaranteed. How about you take out an extra job and invest that money instead of risking money you haven't earned yet.

It is unlikely that your return on investment will be enough to cover fees for loan origination and investment origination on the amount of money allowed to you from Stafford loans. You will want to do the math very carefully. No investment is guaranteed either. You might end up loosing money and you really don't want to have additional debt. I would just use the money for the intended purpose if needed. If not needed, don't borrow it.
