I am trying to schedule a 50-minute presentation to a group of college-aged women about dietary disorders (bulemia, over-exercising, diet aids, narcotics used to lower weight, etc.). Some of them are presently experiencing these challenges, but not all.
My challenges are this:
- I don't want to provide them so much information that I give them ideas of "new" things to try.
- They're pretty savvy women so I don't want to talk down to them.
- I want to keep them engaged and interested, and not lecture for 50 minutes.
- I don't want them to feel like this is an accusatory environment.
- I want them to appreciate not only the risks to their immediate and long-term health but also the impact these behaviors have on others (e.g. competitiveness, resentment, imitating their bad practices, worry, etc.)
Do you have any ideas for creative programming or ideas to present this? I'm trying very hard to steer clear having a former victim or health services person lecture. Thanks! Just deliver your talk in a non confronting manner.
I am surprised that you have not been trained in the various forms of delivery of information to diverse groups.
edited :16hrs later, additional positive information.
However,here are a few ideas.
Everyone there will have one thing in common ,an interest in maintaining a body as free from the ravages of time and health related problems.
As you are aware, most of these could be reduced considerably simply by maintaining a healthy life style and dietary regime.
I have found it amazing that so many from all backgrounds, do not understand the literal meaning of the word diet.
Perhaps the speaker could spend a third of the time =13min approx.
Ensuring that all attending are aware,
That a daily diet is anything you eat or drink that is consumed over a 24hr period.
The basic food groups,a brief explanation of what they are needed for and the best foods to find them in. and the bodies need to have all included in a diet to maintain health.
The need for adequate intake of pure water, besides coffee, tea or juices.
That harm can be done by taking too many vitamins,it can also be a waste of money as with Vit.C excess is expleted naturally.
The need to maintain a healthy "inside".No use having a good looking outside, if the inside is not functioning properly.Which it won't if the bodies metabolism is not functioning well due to diet, lack of exercise or ill health. Also if bowel movements are not regular and normal.
There could maybe, depending on funding or resources a taste table. Where good, but uncommonly used examples of each food group is available for testing.
Or this could just be confined to fruit and veg.,also perhaps some whole grain, low fat, low carb.,scones, breads or crispbreads were available to taste and copies of recipes available were it applies.
The next part of the talk may be in regards to exercise.
I would aim it at the need for maintaining a level of fitness and weight control also, for those wishing to help their weight loss or weight gain.
This would be the shortest session of the three.
Have some group participation,to a level where it is appropriate.
Then maybe a short 4-5 min. break,as 50min is a long time without the speaker being drained and the audience becoming restless and interest waning.
During this break if possible, serve small disposable glasses of a juice the speaker has chosen as appropriate.
I would then introduce the next part of the talk.
Which would involve break ing into 3 or four groups, and having a brainstorm on ways to help a friend if. Have at least 4 "hypothetical situations listed.
Each of the groups takes one for 'brainstorming".
After 8-10min.,have each sum up what their help would consist of and what ideas they would give the "friend".
Then it would be time to sum up and ask if anyone had questions.
I hope this is of some assistance. |
