Do you agree it's wrong to destroy this beautiful English coastline?

This question is about a strip of coastline in Portland, England, which despite being a protected World Heritage Site, is about to be quarried and ultimately destroyed using archaic (but valid) permissions granted back in 1951, when there was an urgent need for stone to aid war recovery.

This coastal strip contains unique wildlife habitats, is of rare archaeological value and attracts many tourists every year with it's rugged beauty, a huge contributor to the local economy.

IF YOU AGREE THAT THE WORLD HERITAGE STATUS SHOULD TAKE PRECEDENCE OVER THE QUARRY RIGHTS and would like the government to step in and do something, then please SIGN THIS ONLINE PETITION.

Geological evolution to me means natural phenomenon, earthquakes, water erosion... digging great chunks out of the coastline is no more geological evolution than shooting all the pandas is biological evolution.

And this is not a local issue - I know because I am not a local! I live in Edinburgh. I really believe this is an issue for the national government - partly because the coast belongs to everybody, and partly because changes in national law are required to protect all such sites.

I believe these changes in law are required to keep the UK in line with it's EU commitments to protect World Heritage Sites. So please don't be put off signing if you don't live locally!

I`ve signed it. I`m fed up with the devastation of digging up one area of the country for gravel or clay to devastate another by building on it.

I can't sign it because I'm not from Britain, but seriously, good luck with your petition. We're fighting similar efforts to mine the dunes on the great lakes. They're a beautiful natural habitat, and some billionaire wants to make even more money by turning them into glass and playground sand. It's a screwy world.

I have two responses. First, if biological evolution is neither right nor wrong, why should geological evolution be any different?

I agree that your cause is a good one. But I doubt that the signatures of nonlocals will be of any interest to the people involved. This petition should be distributed through your local newspaper's website, and any other LOCAL websites that are well known. Good luck with your petition.

I have signed but wonder if it will have any effect. I have been opposing a quarrying operation on a coastal site that is designated SSSI, Heritage Coast, RSPB bird reserve, RIGGS, County Landscape ... I wonder if these protections are worth the paper they are written on! Good luck.
