Can qualified first aiders legally instruct basic first aid to others? |
I'm a qualified first aider working in a school. I have just been asked by a teacher to instruct a group of 13yr olds in basic first aid. I've refused as I suspect you probably have to be a qualified "First Aid Instructor" to teach it. ie if I told the kids the wrong information & they used it on somebody, could it come back to me & I be sued? Does anybody know if this is actually true? I am also a first aider and i wouldn't even think about teaching others how to do this. This teacher was so very wrong to ask you to do this. You were tought by an instructor so should the children. Get the school to contact the British red cross or St Johns they will come to the school free and do basic first aid with the children. I am a EMT certified in the state of PA and I am allowed to help instruct with first aid skills. I am a First aid health officer for a Boy Scout day camp and I help them go over their first aid badges and tell them what they can and can't do and what they are suppose to do I explain to them how to clean a wound what happens if someone gets hurt describe to them what might happen if someone they know is having a heart attack. I think if you are allowed to help or instruct children it would depend on your state law. If you have a question maybe check with your local ambulance station or police dept they might be able to solve the question for you. NO. You need to be a certified instructor. If you do teach a class you could get into HUGE trouble especially at a school. You could get sued, you could get sued and or charged if they do do something wrong in a real situation. If you want to teach go get your instructors certifiction. |
