Vietnam War
The U.S. war in Vietnam was fought from 1959 to 1975 and cost the lives of 1.4 million soldiers and probably about 2 million civilians. The names of the Vietnam Veterans are engraved on the black granite of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. as well as on the hearts of those who love them. It all started after WWII, President Truman and other western allies perceived Communism as the largest post-war threat. Although the U.S. opposed colonialism by France in Indochina they also did not want it to become communist. With the fall of China to communism and the invasion of South Korea by the communist North President Truman backed military aid to the French in Indochina in hopes of stopping communist expansion. Later, President Eisenhower described the domino theory that used the analogy of dominoes. If one country fell to communism the surrounding countries would also fall .Thus, the U.S. created a policy of "containment"..
The French had been fighting communist rebels in Vietnam, their former colony since 1945. Starting in 1950, the U.S. started to send military aid and equipment to the French as part of our "containment" policy. After the French withdrew from Vietnam in 1955 through 1956, the U.S. essentially felt it had to step-in and fill the void in order to support the fledgling South Vietnamese army, the 1956 peace accords had divided Vietnam into North, communist, and South, anti-communist.
Thus, starting in 1955, the U.S. started to send military "advisors" to help the South Vietnamese army fight communist rebels in South Vietnam. Starting in 1961, the U.S. started to greatly increase the number of advisors and equipment to support the South Vietnamese governments. This was viewed as necessary because of the continuing growing strength of communist rebels in South Vietnam.
This war was between Vietnam and the U.S, with the support of France. Ultimately, however, the United States failed to achieve its goal, and in 1975 Vietnam was reunified under Communist control; in 1976 it officially became the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. During the conflict, approximately 3 to 4 million Vietnamese on both sides were killed, in addition to another 1.5 to 2 million Lao and Cambodians who were drawn into the war its a summary essay...cant make in anymore exciting then this =\ You should put a thesis statement in the begining. It is also called the catchy statement, which gets reders attention. I don't know the question but you go from 1956 to 1975, basically skipping America's involvement in Vietnam. Facts are right but the US didn't get really involved until the Gulf of Tonkin incident. yeah you all have the right information but when i'm reading it, i fell like i'm bored. it might not attract readers. The 1956 peace accords did not divide Vietnam. They created two sectors, and envisioned general elections.
Diem prevented the elections in the south, and the US backed him. Diem also launched the "denunciation of Communists campaign" which targeted Viet Minh veterans and supporters in the south, and pushed them into rebellion. The NLF formed in response to Diem's campaign.
The rationale for the war kept shifting, though it was associated with containment. It's a good essay. Maybe I can point out some small changes:
Casualty figures for the Vietnamese deaths differ widely so it
impossible to come up with an accurate figure. However, you shouldn't use two different numbers in the beginning and the end of your essay.
May I suggest:
"The U.S. war in Vietnam was fought from 1959 to 1975. The US government recognizes 58,256 US soldiers who were killed or are missing in action from the war. Precise casualty numbers are heavily in debate, but over a million Vietnamese soldiers and probably about 2 million civilians died. In addition a more than a million Laotian and Cambodians died when they were drawn into the war. "
Drop the last line of the essay with the conflicting information
I would end with a note about the present relationships between the countries instead of a report about casualties.
Twenty years after the takeover, Vietnam and the United States established diplomatic relations on July 12, 1995. The embassy states on their website that "Vietnam attaches great importance to the development of friendship and cooperation with the United States."

(1) The following sentence is very imprecise. Never start a sentence with "It".
"It all started after WWII,"
Say "The roots of conflict began immediately after WWII."
(2) Lastly change one of the two phrases "Starting in 1950" and "starting in 1955". Just use a different word like "beginning". |
